mentalblog.com comments:

why is he blaming the flippers? are they forcing people to buy?
if theres a market for this then the prices will go up regardless and if there isnt, they will come down. but why blame the seller when the buyer is equaly as "guilty"?

can someone say "supply and demand"?

Gravatar Sto,
A little community concience wouldn't be a bad idea. In theory, at least, we have a resposibility for unzer breider...

Gravatar Good luck trying to stop this from continuing...

Gravatar I don't believe this! Where was the righteous indignation when for years there was a communistic corrupt רשימת הבתים in operation in CH!

The scam ran thusly: certain people related to the members of the Vaad Hakohol would be automatically placed "#1 on the list" and were 'flipping' houses that everybody else was barred from bidding on (at the same time these רשעים were shamelessly harassing 'list jumpers'). Where was Shimshon with his letter when it was truly needed? (To clarify: I am not insinuating that he had any connection to רשימת הבתים )

Today the forces of the free market run the day. And fine, I admit, it would be nice if CH was an ‘utopian oasis’, but in reality the present situation actually represents a MAJOR progressive move from evil corrupt communism toward greedy but open-market free-for-all capitalism.

Gravatar what happened to Reshimas Habatim, is it cancelled?

Gravatar mikusher

there are the laws of supply and demand. the reason prices are so high is not because someone is willing to sell for that price, (now get ready....) its because someone is willing to PAY for it!
again: if the market could sustain it it will be. flippers or no flippers.
as a matter of fact i would argue that they are doing the oilam a favor, because they expediting the proccess for the market to deflate if not plummet....

Gravatar The many ridiculous comments on the original blog item demonstrate clearly that many in Chabad suffer from delusional thinking and are unprepared for dealing with (often harsh) realities. (The same is true for many BTs and other Chassidim - who tend to ignore reality instead of facing it.)

Housing doesn't just fall like Mann Min HaShamayim. Neither do chickens for Shabbos, school fees or new Kappottas.

You can work for money, get it from Daddy or go steal it (not that these are all available or recommended options!). But you need money to start. Ein Kemach, Ein Torah.

I personally suffer dearly from my inability to compete financially with much wealthier people. Many people do. And life isn't fair. But market rules are almost as sacrosanct as the laws of physics, Jewish mystical philosophy notwithstanding. Might as well get used to it.

Gravatar jake
granted most of the comments are emotional crap, ignorant of the most basic rules of (here we go again) supply and demand, free markets etc.
the commenters, in this regard, are no different than most of their fellow americans.

but it must be said that crown heights does not have the kolel entitlement mentality.

Gravatar It's commendable that Shimshon Stock comments on a anti-social behavior that causes distress. Flipping occur in other places too. Speculators use their financial muscle for personal gain against the financial interests of the majority. In Jewish communities other than Crown Heights these speculators are usually praised a "shrewd operators".

Gravatar On realtor.com there are plenty of decent houses available in Cambria Heights (neighborhood of the Ohel) for a fraction of Crown Heights. There are enough permanent residents out there to support a Cheder apparently.

Have any of the whiners on that blog considered THAT location as an alternative?

Gravatar I fully understand the realities, as do (I think) all the commenters here. All I said was (in defense of SS): "A little community concience wouldn't be a bad idea"

Did that really sound like I was signing up to vote for the communist party?

Gravatar Mikusher, no it did not. But 'a little community conscience' has to be tempered by 'a little understanding of community history'.
P.S. The proper word is 'mekushor' (present tense verb or a noun).

Gravatar Camp Runamok,
Cambria Heights has very tiny houses, is a very far commute to the city and is not very practical for kids above cheider age. Otherwise, I am sure many have considered that option. I know I did. Shabbosim at the Ohel are great – they have a taam of Chabad of yore.

Gravatar strange timing for the open letter. i am ignorant of the facts as far as CH is concerned, but it seems to me that now with higher rates, tighter financing requirements, slower price growth, etc, etc. flipping should be on the downside.why not 3/2/1 years ago? makes sense?

Gravatar berl posts, "Where was Shimshon with his letter when it was truly needed? (To clarify: I am not insinuating that he had any connection to רשימת הבתים )"

FYI Shimshon fought against the corruption of the Vaad Hakohol for years and they gave him hell and misery for his efforts to help people, but they never stopped him from helping people effectively own his own with little support from the community. He is a baal ahavas yisroel.

Gravatar wannabe,
Anyone with more that two brain sells understood that I was referring specifically to his 'open letter'. And – correct me if I am wrong - but I do not recall any such 'open letter' from this very worthy individual during the EVIL & CORRUPT reshimmas habatim time (and such an open letter at that time might have accelerated the abolishment of that list and maybe – just maybe - a certain 'Rosh Yeshiva' and his marshas of a wife [and others] would rob a few less Jews of their rights to buy homes on the open market). What goes on today is child’s play compared to that time! Whoever did not find it necessary to protest then, should – with all due respect – just shut up now!
Shimshon DOES help many people and deserves [and gets] much credit and respect for that. But his letter is ill-timed. So don't mix kasha mit bochvina.

Gravatar berl, you're an arrogant putz. you think you know everything and are beter than everyone.

Gravatar good point berl: can one claim credit for closing the door after the horse has bolted? Although the only "right" to buy a house is the gelt to pay the seller.

Gravatar Berl,

Cambria Heights has very tiny houses,
In the immediate vicinity of the Ohel yes. Is this true a few blocks away? There are quite a few 4br+ houses appearing in the nabe but I am not sure of proximity.
is a very far commute to the city
So to is Monsey. That does not stop people from going there.
and is not very practical for kids above cheider age. Otherwise, I am sure many have considered that option. I know I did. Shabbosim at the Ohel are great – they have a taam of Chabad of yore.
These are the signs of a newly nucleating community. Getting on the ground floor implie putting up with certain inconveniences. At any rate the Ohel will be there until Techias HaMeisim (regardless of your hashkafah on the matter) and that can only serve as a catalyst over the long term.

FWIW, I live "out of town" and have been considering employment opportunities in the NYC area. Cambria Heights is definitely on my radar.

Gravatar wannabe
if you cant stand the heat, get out of the kitchen

Gravatar Camp Runamok,
All your points are well taken. You have a healthy outlook - hatzlocho!
