Does the Alegemeiner Admur credits the inspiration to Whitman in the tape. I am betting $10 he does not.

I did see the movie, and I did not like it. It was preppy and pop. Years ago though. On the subject of Jacobson’s, they both made a business decision to work the system. This undermines the "scientific validity" of anything they say.

Rebbe - 'Captain', מנין ?
Here are Rebbe's words from a letter penned shortly after the Previous Rebbe's histalkus:
למרות האבדה הגדולה שאבד עם ישראל - הוא קברניטו הוד כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.
(The word קברניט means 'captain' or 'steward' [in this letter - of the 'Jewish nation'])
'Captain, My Captain'

It's not done - it's assumed to be understood by the 'cultured' and deemed unnecessary, akin to explaining a joke. But the idea of calling the Rebbe 'captain' he did not get from Walt Whitman.

How about we settle this: Calling the Rebbe Captain came from the letter. Using the phrase Captain my Captain came from the poem. Agreed?

The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

guravitzer,
Correct. This is, essentially, what I am saying. (Only 'captain' is not necessarily from this letter - the usage of the 'captain of the ship called am yisroel' metaphor in reference to Jewish leaders bichelal and Rebbeim biferat [particularly in conjunction with their histalkus] is not new in this letter either. I merely brought the letter as one example of such usage. As to Noach - mah yinyan shemittoh eitzel har sinai?)

There is a hebrew version of this song by one Meital Trabelsi (or something like that) she refers to Rabin when she sings the song. Nice song nonetheless.

its hardly surprising.
Lincoln was heavily influence by the Hebrew bible, was a believer in G-ds providence, but not particularly Christian, and was leading through times of danger and hope that had a messianic air to them. Whitman had inherited a mystical tradition via transcendentalism, and while not a Christian, had grown up among Christians. There are many deep cultural connections here.
