Rabbi Steinzaltz has opinions about everything,it seems at least. That makes his silence deafening when it comes to the Messianic Lubavitchers.
Tzemach, I hope you try and handle this hot potato issue with him. Also, what does he think about a new Rebbe for Lubavitch which may get Lubavitch back on the sanity tracks.

Something tells me 90% of this dialogue is forged.

the real question is, was the lulav and esrog shaken/taken (netilas) in the presence of a member of the sanhedrin?

Gravatar TA, take a look at the archaeological digs by the old shuls in Eretz Yisreol -columns.

Gravatar my previous comment is talking about shabbos

Gravatar I would like to look into the Sanhedrin thing, but there were no Lulovim in the Shule on Shabbos.

Gravatar The crude neon lights on the walls, and the air conditioners fit into the windows are not in harmony with the general style. These functional elements should be hidden from sight.

The cheap and shiny plastic decorations (kol havod you had the courage to mention them) are more appropriate for a Chinese restaurant and they are a fire hazard. After a few months they lose their brightness and look horrible.

Regarding Hungarian taste, look at the Dohany utca. Everything is larger and more expensive than Vienna ever saw.

Gravatar Good to see you Aryeh and Ari.

Gravatar So we're to believe that Rabbi Steinsaltz would like to be consulted with when the Gabboyim wish to change the ark and for that he feels estranged? For that we need a great Talmudic mind, so that they can get interior design tips from him?

It seems to me that you're making something out of the figment of your imagination. Stick to Boston, punk, and stay out of Israeli business. I bet these guys wish they never opened their mouth to you.

Gravatar Nir, it is you who is in captivity of you imagination, particularly the images you created in your head about Rabbi Steinsaltz. Idiot!

Gravatar For all Tzemach's mishugaasen (or worse), it happens to be that Rabbi Adin is human, and I have had the pleasure of a real down to earth outlandish shocking conversation with the Rabbi, on a Shabbos afternoon, as he commented on MANY issues. For various reasons, they cannot be published at this time. I believe eevery word of the converstaion, and it is probably only part of it.

Gravatar Yes its only part of the conversation. By why do you have to call me crazy, etc? I am human too.

Gravatar Thanks a lot for publishing the conversation. I got (like I needed it) reinforcement of my view of the individual. And, of course, it's a pleasure to see the clown further and further irrelevant to the mainstream Hareidim. I really hope Chabad will go down the same way.

Gravatar Misnaged-in-Law, how do you see the future dynamics of different denomination of people who call themselves Jews today. Could you describe what is going to happen to non frum Jews and how misngdim will relate to the rest of the non-chabad Chasidim in the future?

Gravatar I second Misnaged-in-law.
Tzemach, to see how 'misnagdim' (the term is basically only used by Lubavitch today, the truth is that the misnagdim/chassidim basically stopped since R'Chaim Volozhiners times)view non Lubavitch chasidim, one can take a trip to Lakewood,New Jersey and see a thriving chasidic community which is totally part and parcel of the larger yeshiva community. Can someone cite one example where Chabad as the dominating group in a community has allowed anybody else to thrive, if they can do something about it?Lubavitchs moto basically is:My way or the highway!(once they have gained enough local power)
Btw:Will you get Stensaltz to take a stand on the Meshichisten and the need for a new Rebbe?Go ahead and ask him these questions

Gravatar Don you used to be Truman and I can tell this because you don't leave spaces between words. Do not change names, you will be banned!

Gravatar Tzemach,

I take great umbrage over your confusing me with Don. Just take a closer look at the posts and the difference will become apparent.

Isn't it amusing that Don despises Lubavitch yet wonders about the appointment of a new rebbe? Inconsistent in all but his disdain for Lubavitch. Something akin to an antisemite for whom his hatred of Jews is the expression of a mediocre mind seeking an organizing principle.

Gravatar Truman, where is the show?

Gravatar Tzemach,

What will happen to chazer-fressers is the same thing which happened before, i.e. assimilation. It is, of course, a slower process in Eretz Yisroel, but we are possibly just one scandal (like Goren's mamzeirim) away from formal separation in form of pinkasey yochsim, and if that happens, just imagine how fast the Israelis will turn into a bridge mix. Actually, this by itself may be the peaceful dismantlement of the Zionist entity.
As about the relations between misnagdim and "normal" chassidim like Belz, Viznitz or Aroni Satmar (I didn't include Zalis since for them Chassidus is just a fancy game), it has been balanced for last 180 or so years, and I don't foresee any change. The only difference in the past 60 years is the end of a period of wholesale abandonment of the Toyroh lifestyle by the youth, and henceforth demise of siege mentality which discouraged internal strife among frume Yidden. Nowdays seforim like "HaGaon" can be printed and opinions expressed without fear of Chassidishe terrorism. But of course, since opposition to Chassidus is just a minor point in a total Hashkofo of a Litvak, it's possible to not emphasize it when dealing with someone for whom these issues are dear.

Gravatar Misnaged-in-law
Where do you see Lubavitch ending up?
Any chance tha the 'normal' ones leave and open up shop alone?
Any chance of a new Rebbe?

Gravatar This whole post brings me back to when i lived there, across the street and later, down the block. And Stensaltz! Yom Tov in Yerushalayim …

You aren't by any chance staying on Rehov Ohr HaChayim, are you?

Gravatar no, i am in Nahlaot.
P.S. Shmarya why are so tediously one dimensional and predictable?

Gravatar "Something tells me 90% of this dialogue is forged."

Quite the opposite. It rings absolutely true, and I say this after maybe 100 Shabbosim/Yom Tovim there.

Gravatar Shmarya.
I wouldn't take the Creedmor poster seriously

Gravatar Akiva,

I can not offer any educated guess on how long Chabad will last. After all, Karoim and Kusim are still in existence, and some Turks can clearly show their Sabbatian ancestry. The only issue which is important for me is how long will they be considered a part of mainstream Orthodoxy. IMHO, not long (and "lechashilo ariber" won't help either).
About so called "normal" Lubavichers - first of all, they're few and far between, and secondly, to slowly drift away by sending the children to non-Lubavich Moisdoys etc. is much easier than to reconcile MMS's writings with Yud Gimel Ikrim or to declare him a Min. So, IMHO, no new Lubavicher Rebbe.

Gravatar misnaged-in-law mentions "formal separation in form of pinkasey yochsim". Wait-a-minute! Since the seventies, one in ten is born by AID, so how many שתוקים are there? People should think twice when talking about זרע ישראל

Gravatar Tzemach,

When one enters the e-salon called Mentalblog it is with the expectation that the topics and tenor of the conversation will be intelligent, witty, interesting, usually of substance and occasionally infuriating. Even the pot shots, i.e. the typically crass comments by one note misnagdim, can, occasionally, add to the flavor of the whole mix. But it is sort of like using cilantro; a sprig can sometimes be amusing but anymore is downright disgusting. (For the those who hate cilantro and I am one, see http://ihatecilantro.com just for fun.)

Gravatar Truman, what are you saying?

Gravatar "lechashilo ariber" won't help either"
Pathetic am hooretz, it's 'lechaTchilloh" with a ‘tof’ - the 'pattoch' under the 'lammed' is in place of 'hei haeyedia' and can't be followed by a 'sof'!
Why don’t you just stick to Russian, you proud descendant of 'chazer-fressers'?

Gravatar Ouch.
Berl is angry.
Many great rabbis were poor in dikduk, your grasping at his poor dikduk is dikdukei aniyoos.Figures, you also insult him personally (zchor maaseh avosecho)
Guess that's all the substance you have to challenge him on?
Classic 'ahavas yisroel'

Gravatar Shmilu,
Many great rabbis were poor in 'ahavas yisroel'.

Gravatar What a perfect setup. MIL comments, berl responds, Shmilu makes a lame comment, setting up berl for the smash.

It's outta here baby!

berl rules.

Gravatar עת לאהב ועת לשנא

Gravatar חפר גומץ בו יפול

Gravatar For some people the discussions on/in? Mentalblog are tantamount to a michshol l'fnai ivar or a bor b'rishus harobbim. They charge in where angels fear to tread and wham! they run into the low hanging bar that everyone sees but them. Pure slapstick. Thank you MIL, Don et al, for making my day.

Tzemach,

The etc.-crowd too often becomes the show that occupies the center ring. That said, I enjoy your photography and reportage.

a zeesa yom tov

Gravatar Truman
What exactly made your day:That Lubavitch has been hijacked by a bunch of jackass loonie meshichisten and all you can do is blame a messenger?
Pathetic.

Gravatar Don,

IFIYGD

Gravatar I will refrain from engaging in phallometry with Berl. Let the proud ascendant of chazer-fressers (at least majority of his co-religionists are, including the founder) be happy with his self-perceived wit. And let his materialized Rebbegod always be with him.

Gravatar mil, which shop in monsey do you buy your meat from again?

Gravatar umm, from my observations, Rav Steinsaltz loves to conduct provocative conversations, i imagine civil ones would be boring when you have to speak to as many people as he must---also nir, the baal hatanya (a few days ago in the daily seder) mentioned how it is appropriate and proper to address questions re: the mundane world to torah scholars.
