Tzemach, there were old films that could carry color, they just did not have the technology to reproduce it when showing it. I know that from some of the pictures of those years that were later redeveloped from the negatives in full color, although they had then been developed in b&w.

There are a total of 7 films on "America is nisht andersh", produced by JEM many years ago.

The Frierdike Rebbe did have red hair color.

Well then, we need to thank the "morons" at JEM for providing your blog material. Also, I guess when it comes to Torah knowledge TNLR clearly knows more than any Rebbe.....

The mad Hungarian.

Gravatar Does TA have a peppered beard?

Gravatar I think they colored Rebbe's beard too. How old is he here, over 50? There are pictures from the beginning of his Nesius, 2 years later? And he clearly has grey. Am I wrong on this?

Gravatar Yes. there are pics of the Rebbe in Elul 5711 without an ounce of grey. Also, there may have been som grey hairs, but a movie camera wouldn't pick them up.

Gravatar The Rebbe's beard is black in all early pictures at the beginning of the Nesius. In fact, if you browse through the album "Mekadesh Yisroel", you can see the progression.

Gravatar TA,

Do you actually think the people at JEM have the resources to add color to a 58 year old film? The time it would take - every frame would need to be colored individually - and the cost of doing it would be prohibitive to a cash strapped orginization like JEM.

You may not be aware, but when filming in a room with uncontrolled lighting - sunlight spilling in from the windows combined with the electric lighting - could and does wreak havoc with the color rendition. (This is still true 60 years later) The simple act of moving the camera or the subject being filmed can have a dramatic effect in the coloring of the picture.

Also, the RAYATZ did have a red beard.

Gravatar Yanosh, I don't know about the film but photos of this event published all over are colored. I can's find a link now. But who cares...

Gravatar Does JEM have reason to color a film, or to portray the rayazt doing something osur?

Gravatar The footage was first released in 1999, in a video called "America is no different" it included footage from 7 videos, and a beautiful booklet to accompany it. A list of the chapters:
1. The Rebbe's arrival in NY 9/17/29 - 6 min 40 sec
2. A gathering in honor of the Rebbe's departure from NY 7/15/30 - 3:55
3. A Melave Malka honoring Rebbe's emissary, Itche Der Masmid 11/18/33 - 3:00
4. The Rebbe's arrival in NY 3/14/40 - 8:10
5. The Rebbe's visit to lakewood, NJ 4/16/40 - 7:15
6. The US citizenship COLOR 3/17/49 - 9 min
7. The Rbbe's funeral 1/25/50 - 4:40

Gravatar BTW the most famous picture of the Friediker Rebbe with the shtaimel holding a pen, is from this occassion. Ill try to find it and post it.

Gravatar Here is one of the Rebbe in Baltimore 1/30/30

Gravatar I heard that the Rebbe (the Ramash) specifically hired a color photographer for this event. Apparently the event had special significance (the establishment of the Rebbe on "chatzi kadur hatachton perhaps.)

Gravatar This video was one which R' Moshe Groner z"l played for the Rebbe (on slides) in the Rebbe's room, and the Rebbe was very emotional from it.

L'choira, it was also on Nittel, as were R' Berel Levy's (z"l) videos of Russian Jews asking the Rebbe for brachos, etc.

Can someone verify?

Also, SSD had earlier made "chabad in America", with some of the footage provided later on "America is Not Different" (as Zuravitzer outlines).

Gravatar A pic of the Rebbe RAYATZ coming off the boat 67 years ago today, on a messianic website. GUESS WHO'S FACE HAS BEEN PHOTOSHOPED...

Gravatar Was Barry that old then?

Gravatar acording to Wikipedia he was born on November 2 1923, which would put him at 16 1/2 in March 1940.

Gravatar he does look pretty tall, but in the undoctored picure he definetly has a baby face...

Gravatar here is a much older picture from failedmessiah

Gravatar My late father saw the Rayaatz 2 times in the early 1930's in the Vilna region (Postov) and he always noted that the Rebbe had a red beard.
We now live in an electronic world - village , how can the institutional Chabad people ignore the fact that Rabbi Shimon Deutsch aka Liozner rebbe WAS THE FIRST TO release the Kramer films.
The Lubavitch version came later.
YEME BREISHISH notes the existance of these films yet until Deutsch got hold of them from the Kramer family
Chabad was in no rush to release them.
Could it be because the chief players in the films besides the Rebbe was the Rashag, Rachal, Rebbetzin Nechama Dina , Moshe Horenstein and others.
Not only is the 7th rebbe missing in most of the film , but the Rashag is clearly playing first fiddle.

Gravatar I was told that Shabbos was RASHAG's Yahrzeit.

Gravatar Shneur, watch the film!
In the films of 1930 the was NOT in America. In the Lakewood films the Rebbe was not in America yet either! I don't have the time now to get into why.
I'd love to see a film of Horenshtein.
Rashag, Lieberman etc. are not in the 1949 film. It was a Merkos affair -see Rabbis Mindel, Kazarnofsky and Hodakov are all present. Rashag was not only not invited, the FR wrote that he may NOT attend! We have the letter!!!!

Gravatar lets see the letter CHOZEH

Gravatar Tzemach,

Firstly, if you watch the video you can clearly see how the Rebbe's hand is folded a little and not completly staright up. There are many rumors that the FR did this Bidavka.

Until JEM put out the videos everyone said that the Rebbe had told Moshe Groner not to show it (either the citzineship or the Levaya or both).

Barry was born in Pey Gimmel which would make him sixteen. When he was younger he did have a big build and he looked older then his years. Although when he got older he looked much smaller and kind of frail. He used to help the Frierdiker Rebbe to walk in Polnad also togther with R' Chaim Liberman.

Yes, Shabbos was Rashags Yartzeit.

Agav, Leibel Groner's brother from EY was Niftar. If I recall correctly, I dont think that he was Lubavitch and he think he was a staunch Mizrachi.

Gravatar the hand is folded because he was paralyzed.

Gravatar Is raising the hand actually a real problem? Yikes! I knew we weren’t supposed to say I swear (rather we say I affirm), or place our hand on a cheifetz, but when I was in court I raised my hand, and when my wife became a citizen she raised her hand. This may be simple am-ha’aratzus on my part, but nobody ever told me not to do it. Can someone provide a mare-makom that I can look up?

Although a Google search did find that there are 5 ways to indicate oaths in Chumash:
- I swear
- The Raising of the Hand
- Repetition
- Therefore
- By My Life
(see: Berashis 14-22 the loshon of shavua is used: “I RAISE MY HAND TO HEAVEN”)

Any Halachists out there?

Gravatar The points I am raising are : why if everyone knew the films existed they were never publicized while the Rebbe was alive ?
And I am sure that the real farbrente Chassidim of the Dor Shvii have a chalishuth hadaas watching the footage of 1929 and 1940 and the impt role that Bere, Rashag, Nechama Dina and the Rachal played and their role in 1950 and again in the Sforim case.Lets be real the Rbebe did not like these people and why release the film ?
On another matter I am sure there are hundreds of other photos of the Raaatz in Poland and Latvia , but I imagine that most have one or more of the people mentioned above in them and can not be released.

Gravatar Why, when we can just crop them or photoshop them?

Gravatar who are 'we'?

Gravatar A friend of mine knew an old fellow who saw Rayat"z when he visited the US in 1929 and remembered him as having a "flaming red beard". I saw in an old edition of העבר (vol 1 or 3) metioning that a the Schneersohns had blond or red beards. Deutsch also mentions it.

By the way, there is a scene in Deutsch's video which was removed from the "America is Nisht Anderesh" (a dumb title in my opinion) video. It shows a host greeting the men by shaking their hands and ladies by kissing them on the cheek. It's either before the kabolis panim of R' Itchele Masmid or R. Mordecai Heifetz, can't recall which.

Gravatar Yehuda, why is it a dumb title?

Gravatar It sounded to me like a meaningless phrase, a jingo.

However, I just remembered that I saw the Lubavitcher Rebbe, ZT"L, stress that in the second portion of the video, so I retract that statement. While I have issues with Lubavitch in general, I would not use such words to describe a phrase used by the Rebbe as a defining the tenure of the Rayat"z

Gravatar Thank you, that is why they used it. I was wondering why you had made such a statement, and hoped it was out of ignorance.
