Schneur, the family Mashber was definitely Der Nister's own family. Luzi Mashber was his older Breslover brother perhaps.

I am sure Kahanowitch gave him self literary liscence and wrote the book based on more than 1 model. I found the same to be true of Reb Grade in my conversations with him.Thats the difference between a writer and a author of memoirs.
I do not think you can compare the Schneersohn dynasty to the Twerskys or Friedman's.
Although the Schneersohns were not poor. They were hardly high rollers. Yes they vacationed and probably dressed well, but they did not live in palaces with many servants and horses.
Rabbi Shmaryahu Gourary was a scholar besides coming from a wealthy family.
