Chernovtsi aka Tchernowitz is the main city of Bukovina and was part of Rumania in the interwar years. Before that it was a special unit of Austria,i.e. neither Hungary nor Galicia, etc., and for that reason most native Jews were German speaking. Subsequently, the Jewish population became predominantly Bessarabian. Vizhnitsa was a shtetl not far away.

"The army destroyed the entire cemetery. They smashed all the headstones - as well as the small ohel on Yisroel of Rizhin's grave, which they dug up, and they made off with his bones."

simple, it speaks there about Sadigora nor Chernovitz. Here it says the kever is in Chernovitz. It could be broken telephone though.
To make this more complicated in Russia we always spoke about two difrent Chernovitz, this one is Bukovina/Carpathian/Romanina/Western Ukraine and then there is another Chernovitz in Ukraine proper.

The Internation Jewish Cemetery Project indicates that his kever is in Sadigora:

"The earliest known Jewish Community was 18th century. 1939 Jewish population (census) was 1488. Living here was Rabbi Israel Friedman from Ruzhin (1840.) Buried in unlandmarked cemetery are Rabbi Israel and his sons."

Chernovitz is the capital of the Bukovina region. The northern part of Bukovina belongs to Ukraine while the Southern part belongs to Romania.
During the inter-war years the entire Bukovina belonged to Romania.
Pre WWI, the entire Bukowina was a crown land of the Austrian Empire, with German the spoken language of the general population.

German was never the spoken language of the populace, only of the better-educated classes, and even then often as a second language. Vinitza is not related to Vizhnitsa, the former is a city whereas the latter is a small town.

Dear A Simple Jew, did you ever come to this blog without an implicit goal of providing a link back to your site? I don't think there was one time you came here just to hang out with us. It is always a link of some sort... How utilitarian.

From what I understand during Austrian Rule which lasted several hundred years the official language and the one appearing on all documents was German.

bochur,
You can't even sign your real name but instead you post some lashon hara? Maybe instead of sitting around on the internet, a 'holy' bochur such as yourself should get back to the zal.
