Tzemach, kovi has some interesting points. I think he is right about the futility of the monastic education and lifestyle represented by yeshiva & kollel.
If bocherim were encouraged to work at their learning in a mesudardikkeh fashion perhaps there would be no need to abandon it as it would be precious and concrete (as opposed to prestigious and ephemeral) in their eyes and provide them with the skills to face life.
