That "androgynous creature" is a very decent human being--and also a Cohen-- and a longtime follower of Zalman and of Shlomo Carlebach. Unlike many who passed through the insanity of psychedelics, this man still has a strong connection to Judaism, albeit more along the Jewish Renewal lines.
His health, nebbech, could be better. He used to be much more vigorous. He does not deserve your contempt.
Zalman himself is not what he once was. His 2003 book Wrapped in a Holy Flame has very good chapters summarizing the lives and thought of the Rebbes of Chabad. It also contains some very muddy writing. Sadly, the better chapters were written in the 1950s and 60s, and the less good ones are recent.
