I remember HaRav Moshe Feinstein's levaya. It was Ta'anis Esther and thousands of Jews of all backgrounds attended, as did the Mayor. People filled the streets in all directions for at least 6 blocks. It was a sight to see. The Hesped was heard from outside his Yeshiva via loudspeakers arranged outside. Afterwards, the subway station simply unlocked the gates and Jews who entered the subway dropped their tokens into a cardboard box; it was all on the 'honor system'.
One group was very visibly not represented - Lubavitchers. There was some kind of farbrengen or something going on at the time and while all kinds of Jews paid their respects to the Posek HaDor, Lubavitchers were in some other world, contemplating yet other worlds, or, perhaps, contemplating nothing at all. Or maybe they were just contemplating the end of the fast when they would be able to get down to the business of serious drinking for Purim.
Yet again, Lubavitch separated itself from the rest of Judaism. I haven't forgotten that.

More importantly the rebbe did not attend Reb Moshe's funeral in the US either. This despite Reb Moshe's risk taking by visiting the rebbe in his office at 770 during a wedding in CH.I think he deputized Rabbi Gourary to represent him (Being aware of his relationship with his brother in law Gourary this was no kavod to the nifter) as the trip from CH to the LES was long distance and very tasking in the days before the Laptop computers
There were many Mitzvoth which apparently did not apply to the Nasi hador (see Rambam Code Chapter 0 Section 0). Halvayaas hames was one of them. The Rebbe either spent several minutes at R. Yankel Rosenbaum's funeral or did not follow the aron at all. The rebbe rarely attended a funeral. Bikkur cholim was another mitzva the rebbe apparently rarely did. The rebbe did not accompany his wife on the trip to the hospital when she died. He was informed by Jimmy Gurary from the hospital that she died. Being mesamaech Chasan vekalo apparenlty was also a mitzva that after a cetain point no longer applied to the Nasi.
All these issues are explained in clarity by the noted halachic scholar rabbi Shmuel Butman in his magnum opus Leadership and halacha.
Very strange minhogim by the Nasi hador I wonder if Maase Melech discusses these issues.

In my earlier note, I said nothing and meant nothing about the Lubavitcher Rebbe himself.
I did note, however, that Lubavitch Chassidim and Lubavitch Chassidus were noteworthy in their absence in this event and that this frequent separation from normative Torah-observant Judaism is, in the eyes of many Torah-observant Jews, a defining characteristic of Lubavitch.

First a short introduction. In my opinion the Lubavitcher rebbe like other rabbonim and great leaders was not infalliable. He was a human who was subject to the laws of human psychology. He did much good for the Jewish community , and I recognize his leadership abilities especailly in the areas of Public Policy. but he ws not perfect and as any complex person had a "dark" side as well.
So chalilo vechass that I accuse the rebbe of being a rosha or the like (R"L), but I am curious to know how you interpret concepts like asher nasi yechta, or zaken mamre in Mesichta Horyos ? What is this all about or is it like Ben sorer umore ?
Was Yochonon Kohen gadol just a story or are there horas from this tragedy ?Its amazing men like Eli hakohen, Shlomo Hamelech and Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakai all come in for criticism in the Talmud ,, but the rebbe can not be criticized. I am not interested why but what are all this Tora concepts all about ?
