yarmulkas are added to both photos.

This is perfect venue to opine on 'history editing.' I believe that the yarmulkah added on the bottom photo is a lie that represents the truth, while the one on the top is just a stupid lie. Both are done badly and that is unforgivable.

this is by the way the same question why one needs to have a Rebbe as a great artist and not respect him for what he was. In this case it is not respecting the pain of the man in KGB hands or the historical context of Russia.

I agree, but it is more complex here. (Maybe?)

berl, are we the only two people who see that this is editing?

what are you suggesting as an alternative?

publishing the pictures in public domain as they were does not constitute some form of disrespect in your opinion?

granted, anyone with a minute understanding and historical perspective wouldn't think twice, but alas, you cater to the masses [which are asses].

1. I would MUCH prefer that the prospective viewers of the picture understood the historic context and absorbed the tragedy of the picture as it was. But I think in this matter you simply can't underestimate the audience. So if you are knowingly putting this out to this ignorant audience that will definitely just say, “Hmmm, why is this guy not wearing a yarmulka,” are you not, in fact, lying instead of telling the truth?

2. More importantly: let’s say there was a prison picture of the same person done in a medical examiner’s room showing him fully naked. Tragic. Would make you weep. But do you have the moral right to put it out there and intrude on the man’s dignity? Same goes for a forced yarmulka-less shot for this man who in most likelihood never had it fall off his had in his sleep...

TA, the editing is crude and is obvious to all, so in this case nothing was accomplished by it AT ALL.

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The editing was made crude on purpose so that the intelligent people would still see the true shot and appreciate the tragedy, while and the idiots would be pacified!

Let them who say I have no ahavas yisroel read the preceding comment of mine and weep! :)

as you said, you give them too much credit...

No, berl, I would not accuse you of stealing someone's 'Ahavas Isroel' or anives'.

Gravatar What does the sign R'Shmuel is holding say, in English?

Gravatar yehupitz, the sign says his name "Schneerson Shmul Zalmanovitch".

Gravatar Yehupitz-

The sign says, "Schneerson Shmuel, Zalmenovitch".

Thus, according with files written then: Surname, First name, son of ___" -

His father's name was Boruch Schneur - or Boruch Schneur Zalman - as brought in his "Reshimos HaRabash" (Kehot, 5761), that at times he'd sign one way or the other.

There is also a facsimile there, where he signs with Zalman as well.

[The sefer, which was recently-discovered from the Nazi confiscation of a fraction of the FR's library, is his unique first-hand accounts at the Rebbe Rashab, as well as mentioning that his grandson, the Rebbe, put on Tefillin 2 months before his BM.

It's available here:

Gravatar father and son are wearing the same yarmulka with the characteristic sharp point to the left.

Gravatar As I wrote above the truth in Judaism is not always an absolute value.
There is a picture of the last Belzer rav in Syria on the way to Israel. He has no beard and is sitting next to Chief rabbi Herzog.
Should this photo be printed ?
On the pro side it portrays the travails of klal israel and the tragedy of the times. It is also the truth.
On the negative it presents a hero of Israel in "his shame" should we embaress the man ?
My thoughts are that I would never reprint this picture even though it has been reprinted. The kavod of the Belzer rav and Yiddishkayt in general demands Tzeniuth and caution. This goes for members of the Schneersohn family as well. I beleive we have a nice photo of Reb Samuel in Toldos levi Yitzchok by Gottlieb . Or is that the other brother ?

Gravatar re: virtual yarmulkas

There was a time in Tomchei Timmimim when a yarmulka that slipped off the head of a sleeping bocher but who failed to waken and replace it, was grounds for reproval or dismissal. (so the story is told around the table) Such a degree of ingrained yiras shomayim that has become teva shainis is beyond most of us during the latter years of the sixth millenium. Nevertheless there still remains an appreciation, among some for such manifestations of frumkeit. Hence, the compulsion (so it appears to us who are sophisticated; see original perjorative definition) to cover erva in violation of the facts as an attempt at serving a more profound truth. (see b,ch's comment above). To persons who hold such sentiments a bare head is a shame and they conduct themselves as Shem and Yaphess ben Noah rather than Chom. Just imagine how you would feel if a museum wanted to display a photograph of your mother or father standing totally exposed during a Nazi raid on their shtetl. Wouldn't you ask for some doctoring of the photograph to recover a vestige of their dignity? The distance of time and anonymity notwithstanding, portraying such a scene, unedited, only serves to further the Nazis' intention of degradation and dehumanization.

Gravatar Schneur -

It is the same one.

Here's a link to the other picture, as well as a document with his signa (scroll down):

Also worth mention, there was a memento (still available on the market: http://store.kehotonline.com/ ind...itemsperpage=10 ) for the Rebbe's 70th wedding anniversary, which has correspondence between R' Shmuel, R' Leivik and the Rebbe at the period before the chasuna.

Gravatar "The truth in Judaism is not always an absolute value." P'shah! Cover yourself, man. Have you no shame?

Gravatar Truman, Bemechillas kevodcha , put away the PC for a moment and look into the Shulchan Aruch... and you will see what I mean.

Gravatar Emes, Sfas Emes and Emes La'Amito - and that is in Elokus!

Gravatar Shneur,

Is it Toras Emes or just toras whatever?

Gravatar The poignant image of R Shneerson projects strength and fortutude rather than humiliation. Airbrushing in a yarmulka is silly and disingeneous, and only detracts from its pathos. Religious correctness aimed at idiots makes idiots of everybody.
