Wouldn't it be funny if he got a Jewish burial? Maybe not so funny.
Was he married? Did he have family? I think the law might have prescribed that the body be released to next-of-kin who would have rights to choose funeral proceedings. If they are Jews, they might decide on a Jewish burial.

Shem roshaim yerakev,
I know he was young and I know he went through the war... and that only emphasizes my comments above. I guess he wanted to be the same religion as the Fuhrer. In Europe Meshumadim by and large converted to advance their careers and or social status.
In My Uncle the Netziv R' Baurch depicts a conversation in which the Netziv was engaged. Apparently there was a meshumad that was still a yid at heart and even tried to help the yidden. I guess a crowd was discussing this guy and they asked the Netziv's opinion. He told a story of a woman that was sick and was ordered to eat treife meat she flatly refused until the Rav intervened. She relented with the condition that the meat was prepared as if it were Kasher with shechita melicha bedikus etc... After examining the beheima the Rav hesitated. When asked what was wrong the Rav stated that couldn't pasken KASHER on a chazir. The same said the Netziv, applies to the meshumad. I say the same applies to Lustiger. R"L

Actually Prof Daniel Chwolson a famous Meshumed in Czarist Russia was highly esteemed by such gedolim as rav Yitzchak Elchonon for his good works and shtadlanus on behalf of Russian Jewry. That does not justify his action.

SDR, the Furhrer persecuted and killed many priests if and when they protested him in any way. He was very far from being a religious person. Priest and monasteries risked of being wiped out if they found hiding Jews, as in this case French Catholics hid Jewish children. Lustiger was probably either grateful or inspired by these people and that was the cause for his conversion not because he wanted to be in the Fuhrer's fold.
