Maybe that's true in Taxachusetts, but it is not true in the South, the Midwest, or the Southwest. You need to get out more. It's a big country.

having moved recently to a white suburban part of brooklyn(!), i must admit that i am somewhat burdened, though delighted, by very friendly neighbors.

short stopover in atlanta. took a car to check out the chabad house (suburban enough setting) and buy some food for next leg of flight. pass by shvartze doing some garden work outside chabad house, and he yells out, "Hey, rabbi!" sounded genuine. touching. same happened in krogers. the whole southern thing turns out true.

aaargh, yes it is true. The friendliness and everyday common courtesy of people in the South, of all races, is real. Rarely will you hear a car honk its horn in anger or impatience, even in Atlanta, which is more than 50% Yankee transplants.

Newton's many bustling neighborhood business districts are different from the quiet and leafy residential sections. And to imply that Newton is anything like the average American suburb is lunacy.
