To my mind modal scales are just major scales that start on a note other than Do. Re to Re is called Dorian, Mi to Mi is Phrygian etc. - the names come from regions of ancient Greece. A blues scale is pretty much Mixolydian, a major scale with a flatted (dominant) seventh. And to be completely honest the Ionian mode IS the scale Do to Do, by it usually isn't called that.
