I have to agree with this post. I could never vote for McCain. On the 3 issues that are important to me, Foreign Policy, Trade Policy and Immigration, McCain is against me on every one.

I just finished reading Pat Buchanan's new book, Day of Reckoning, which I highly recommend. He points out how our FP is bankrupt because our liabilities, in this case foreign aid and defense alliances, exceed our capabilities to cover their costs.

It's mind boggling to see how much we spend to keep bases in a hundred countries around the world. For example, we are we spending billions to defend S. Korea from N. Korea 55 years after the Korean War. SK's economy dwarfs NK and she has access to modern American weapons. SK can more than defend herself. The same can be said about troops in Japan and Germany.

On trade he gives a great history lesson of how the US lead by Hamliton instituted a series of tariffs and refused to adopt "free trade". Technically we did practice free trade among our states which was benefical to the growth of our economy and our sense of nationhood. However, imports from foreign nations were subject to tariffs.

This lasted up to the 1930s and made the US the manufacturer of 40% of the world's goods. He pointed out how both the US and Germany passed Great Britain in the latter part of the 19th century as GB dropped all tariffs and adopted free trade. Even today the rise of Japan, S. Korea and China can be attributed to managed trade or protectionism.

Unfortuantely the debate over free trade has come to mean you are either for free trade, which means you are open to the world, or you are for protectionism, which means you want to isolate America from the world. This is unfortunate because it causes many people to ignore how the US became the world's economic power.

From our founding, we have always engaged in foreign trade. Why did Jefferson dispatch the Navy and Marines in 1805 to the Mediterraean? Answer, to stop the Barbary Pirates from capturing American merchant ships. Why was Commodore Perry dispatched to Japan in 1853? Answer, to open up Japan for trade.

Keep in mind this was being done while we were following Hamilton's plan for placing tarrifs on imports to raise revenue and give an advantage to domestic producers. Therefore, the notion that protectionism means isolation from the world is bull. Japan, South Korea and China all practice trade protection, yet no one is suggesting they are isolated from the world.

What I can't understand is how anyone who professes to be for "free trade" can idly dismiss our loss of manufacturing that has occured because of these policies. How can it be good to go from the most self sufficient republic in history to one that is dependent upon others for much or her goods? Sure the cost of items at Wal-Mart might be less, but how is it good that we are no longer independent?

Part 2 - Sorry for the long post, I did realize it would get cutoff. Continuing.....

On immigration, I believe we cannot have unlimited immigration in a welfare state, and in a state that allows dual citizenship and ballots in a language other than English.

During the last big immigration rush from the late 1800s to 1924, the US had no social safety nets. Immigrants came knowing they had to sink or swim on their own, and no one would bail them out if they failed. Not so today as anyone who has been to an emergency room can attest.

Assimilation was pushed during this time. Newly minted citizens had to disavow loyalties and allegiances to foreign nations. Not so today as people are allowed to keep their previous citizenhip and vote in their native language.

Leading mainstream politicians at that time, like Teddy Roosevelt, made speeches stressing the importance of assimilation and not having hyphenated Americans. Some of the speeches he made around 1905 would probably get him impeached if they were made today.

Bottom line the social costs to the taxpayer far exceed the benefit of allowing anyone to come to America. Further, the fact that assimilation is no longer politically acceptable risks the fracturing of our nation. I cannot say for sure we are heading down the proverbial path of balkanization. But why on Earth would anyone take the risk?

In summary, I cannot support McCain. He is for continuing our bankrupting foreign policy, deleterious trade policy and is risking the balkanization of our nation with his open borders immigration policy. However, conservatives should still turn out to vote in November. Support local, state and federal candidates who support our positions. We especially need allies in congress given a McCain, Clinton or Obama win. Just vote for someone else for President even if that means a write-in candidate.
