the game is probably even better than that -- If the "winning" prospects don't bite after the first "good" recommendation, give them another one. Those whose second recommended stock goes up get a second call, which is now even more "credible". After each round, the sales pitch gets stronger and stronger.

There's actually an old brokerage industry joke about prospecting with a volatile stock. You tell half of your prospects that it's a red-hot buy and the other half you tell to short it. After it makes a big move, you call up the folks who received the correct recommendation and say, "shouldn't you have your account with a genius like me?"
I'm not sure if anyone actually used this technique, but I wouldn't be surprised.
