I'm still trying to compose a temperate post on the election (it might take some time), but I have to say I see your clouds and your silver linings almost in the opposite direction.
SF only did badly in comparison to their own propaganda. By other measures, they built quite a consistent 6% across the state. It's an open question as to whether they've hit a ceiling or, when Bertie goes before the next election, whether they've put themselves in a strong position from which to build.
And as for JHR, he certainly looks a buffoon from this end of the country, but I hear he's a phenomenal constituency (by which I mean potholes and planning applications) TD.

Admittedly Ciarán, my comments on Sinn Féin are heavy on schadenfreude.
Before the election, they were certain that they would hold all five seats they had, and in addition would gain five more (Dublins Central, North-East and North-West; and the two Donegals). That they failed in this respect is to be celebrated.
Sinn Féin is a very wealthy party, and are seen as canny media operaters. Remember the photo at Stormont with Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley. Who is sitting beside Adams? Mary Lou McDonald.
In 2002, Sinn Féin won 6.5% of first preferences and won five seats. In 2007, they won 6.9% of first preferences and won four seats. They like to think of themselves as the fastest growing party in Ireland. 0.4% gain in 1st prefs, and 20% loss in seats over five years would seem to suggest otherwise.

Jackie Healy Rae is a machine, he never stops working, he answers the phone no matter what time it is. He is PURE HEART and a terrific caring person who would take the shirt off his back for someone...People who take cheap shots at him should take a close look at their own lives. Jackie Healy Rae is a success story and a person of substance and honesty.
