Can you believe some of the absolute shit that becomes ballot measures? Fertilized egg = full human rights. Fully grown gay person = no human rights.

What really amazes me is that the general public is allowed to vote on these things. Human rights should never be put to a referendum, and the rights to marriage and reproductive freedom are definitely basic individual human rights.
It would be one thing if they were voting on whether the taxpayers should fund these things, but they're not. These are issues that don't affect anyone except the people who avail themselves of those rights.

This prop 8 is truly skeery, with the connection to the church of latter day assholes.
They have dumped 20 million into it, and have been working on it since 1997.
With the way they can focus on long term hate, instead of something constructive to humanity.....Mind boggling really.

Credit where credit is due - Stephen Harper taking over from Stockwell Day killed the prospect of citizen-initiated referenda. They're monstrous.
If Prop 8 goes through - and I think there's a good chance of it - these people will still be married in New York, Massachusetts, Connecticutt, Canada, South Africa, Israel, Spain, Belgium, Norway and the Netherlands, but not where they actually got married.

There are also Prop 8-like amendments in Arizona (prop 102) and Florida (Amendment 2). They have been off the radar but will do the same damage to gay people in those states.
I agree that the idea of people voting on human rights is absurd, also, the idea that a Constitution can be changed by a %50 vote +1 in one referendum is absurd too.

No, they won't do nearly the same damage. Marriage is already illegal in those states and will remain so regardless of the outcome of these votes. California is about taking away existing rights and dissolving existing marriages - something even Stephen Harper promised he wouldn't do to existing marriages.

Time to have a drink or six and relax and wait for the outcome, I think. Whatever's in the cupboard will do nicely, thanks. Neat.
Oh, JJ -- you're nominated for Best Blog Post Series.

pale - The thing that blew my mind about Prop8 is that so much of the financial support is coming from out of state. The issue not only doesn't affect these people, it isn't even about where they live, so it really doesn't affect them. Yet they're fervent enough to put their money up anyway. That kind of hate is scary.

RB - When you look southward, Steve looks more and more like a red tory Not that he's to be trusted -- I think he'd sway whatever way the wind blows. If it looked like it would get him a majority, he'd probably be OK with referenda on marriage and abortion. The problem is there are more people who believe these issues are nobody's business than there are nosy socons.

toujoursdan - "the idea that a Constitution can be changed by a %50 vote +1 in one referendum is absurd too."
Exactly, it's insane. You would think that voting on a person's right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness would be against the constitution itself.

Thanks. I did the best I could. Although Texas was a shoo-in for McRove, it was a lot closer than it would normally be.
Oh, and congradulations California, Arizona and Florida! You just made homosexuality a crime! *headdesk*
