Well, yes.
It comes down to this - Paul Thomas Anderson has to strain to make a good movie, while the Coen Brothers (TM) have to strain to make a bad one. Take Magnolia, for instance - a decent Robert Altman knock-off, with that over-praised Tom Cruise Serious Acting (believie mee, he's better in Eyes Wide Shut because he doesn't have to be 'naturalistic'), but really now, why is it considered such a work of genius? And what's with the frogs???
No Country for Old Men, again, is a nearly perfect film. Love it or hate it, the thing is just that fine...

Now that you mention it, the frogs at the end of Magnolia are not unlike the antics at the end of There Will Be Blood.
