The 2004 olympics started on August 13. The RNC 2004 started on August 30, the day after closing ceremonies.
Since Obama made such a big ad buy for the olympics this year, my prediction is he will announce the VP on August 7, the day before it opens.

no, in 2004, the olympic games were from august 13-29. the DNC was before it (7/26/04 to 7/29/04) and the RNC was after it (8/30/04-9/2/04). i'm not sure why the parties were willing to hold the convention on either side of the olympics when they're not willing to do it this year. was that later perceived to be a mistake?

If I remember correctly, didn't Kerry accept public financing for the general and have a money problem because he accepted so early? He was practically dark through august, when the swiftboat stuff started.
Of course, Obama isn't accepting financing, so it isn't an argument against him doing it in July.
but he was originally planning to accept public financing, and the convention dates have been set for at least several months, predating when we even knew that obama would be the nominee.
