I agree with your comments. This is the time to distinguish conservatives and libertarians and realize they are really quite different. Libertarians support policies that undermine the possibility of a libertarian country. Libertarianism is a nostalgic vision of the 19th century frontier or Colonial America. But it advocates policies taking us farther from both of those.

Gravatar Are we becoming less politically consistent, and more personality-oriented in politics?

Yes. Look at the almost perverse view of politics coming from rightwing talk radio, in which the Clintons have been villified to a degree that makes no sense. At the same time, Bush was the hero of the conservative movement, at least for a while. All this with blatant disregard to the issues.

Gravatar Old Atlantic - I agree.
I do think libertarian ideas have supplanted a lot of traditional conservative ideas for a lot of people and that's where the problem is. From what I've observed over the last several decades, this has become more pronounced recently.

Californian - I have to agree about the rather irrational stuff on much of 'conservative' talk radio these days and at places like Free Republic. This evening some Freepers were gloating about Obama's victory in Oregon because it would ''drive a stake through the Witch's aorta" or something along those lines. I mean, I dislike the Clintons but they are not horror movie monsters or superhuman. This kind of attitude will lead to some very irrational voting, motivated by personalities and spite.

Gravatar I am tired of people playing politics. I want a candidate that says what he means and sticks to it. Why should I have faith in a politician who will change his views to suit what he percieves as the wind?
