Something's Gone Wrong Again

Names are escaping me at the moment but I know there's a goodly number of Australian punk artists that have died from direct dabblings with "the gear." Names anyone? One of the cats from BORED is definitely one of 'em.

Yeah, if I may Blogwhore for a moment, I did a post on Tim Hemensley who was in Bored for a bit and then The Powder Monkeys. Sean Greenway of God (with Hemensley), Freeloaders and The Yes Men also died of heroin OD and there might be a few more. The guy in The Eastern Dark died in a car crash though, I think.

Excellent compilation, I was originally going to say Dave Insurgent.. But, although a heroin addict, he actually died of suicide (after his girlfriend was killed by the infamous Long Island serial killer).

This was just part one. I'm planning on doing a couple of other posts in this vein: suicides,(i.e. Dave Insurgent), auto deaths, and medical issues (JLP from Gun club). Pretty morbid shit when you think about it...

Anyone ever read that Germs book? I'm always wondering if it's worth the cash.

The Germs/Darby book is good,it is supposed to be coming out in a revised editon soon. It is a good idea to read the book"We got the Neutron Bomb" by the same author, it helps give some background about the late 70s LA punk scene. The books are not perfect, they maybe be a bit Hollywood/Masque Centric, but they give a good feel for those dayz.

Chris Smith from Battalion of Saints/Kraut OD'd as well in '86, I believe. This guy was, seriously, the Hendrix of punk-metal guitar-playing. Nobody could touch this guy back in the day .... amazing axe-man.

I was gonna mention Chris Smith as well. I seem to remember the story being that he drowned in the bathtub which equals o.d. I s'pose. I think one of the BOS bass players also died at one point.

Hard to believe I overlooked Battalion of Saints, what with all of the death and bad luck associated with them. I'll work them in at some point

Listening to Johnny Thunders's "One Track Mind", you can clearly hear the influence that Richard Hell had when he was in the Heartbreakers: with the exception of the chorus, it's basically a rip-off of Hell's song "Love Comes in Spurts"! It becomes even more obvious when you hear the older version of "Love Comes in Spurts" that Hell played when he was still with the Heartbreakers...
Also, speaking of Richard Hell, add to the list of heroin overdoses the Voidoid's amazing guitar player, Robert Quine. He OD'd last year. He worked with so may great people, like Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Lou Reed, John Zorn, Brian Eno, and Tom Waits, and yet barely anyone knows his name. A tragic loss of one of the finest guitar players in punk.
