I had to respond to this post! I have been a SAHM for almost 8 years but before that I was a career woman. I have a BA in Psychology and Computer Science and was a Project Manager in a large IT department. I loved my job.
Throughout my 8 years at home now I have had many people mad at me for quiting my job and staying home. Why? I don't know. Our former neighbors in MN would yell out their car window on their way to work "get a job!". When I responded that I had a job, the husband would yell back "get a real job!". Him and his wife were obviously jealous that we could afford it for me to stay home. It is the only reason my husband and I could think of such rude comments.
Now I live in Orlando and the neighbors across from us are both teachers. The wife tells me (yes, she actually opened her mouth and these words came out of it!) that she is raising her sons to look for a wife that has a career and is working so they don't have to support her! Can't you believe that? When I was working I was making more money than my husband (who was a Lead Internet Engineer for a large telecommunications company)! But I gave up my career for a more important calling. Oh yeah, this is the same family that I babysat their boys for over 3 full weeks this summer while they were packing to move! And while I really wasn't expecting any payment, they did not offer me any and I didn't receive a dime. I watched the kids from anywhere between 9-11 am and they were picked up between 7-9 pm!
Another instance was another neighbor in MN, she was an elementary school principal. She was pregnant with her second child when I was expecting our first (and only) child. She asked my husband how long my maternity leave would be and he responded that I would be quitting a month before my due date. She was appalled. She said she couldn't imagine quitting, "she loves her kids at school to much". But what about her own children? They ended up moving to another midwestern state. If you have a Stephanie for a principal and she has three kids, it might be her!
Yes, I have had the displeasure of having the working moms speak disrespectful to me of my choice to stay home. Personally I think most of it is jealousy that their husband can't afford the loss of their income.
While I could go on and on about specific instances where I have been criticized or treated rudely by working moms!
I hope that I am an exception rather than the rule.
