In regards to the President's speech last evening. I was struck by the following items:
1. The mention of Iran and Syria. It seems to me that this president has just outlined a future that will perpetually keep this country involved in war in a part of the world that has been warring long before this country came along.
2. And this is along the same vein. If I was to write a summary thesis statement of the president's speech it would conclude with the following: President Bush views America as a country whose sole mission is to spread democracy around the globe (reasons for which are many), all the while allowing the freedoms our Founding Fathers gave birth to are eroding because of this president's reign (i.e., signing statements, Patriot Act, Real ID Act).
The president uttered the following, "The challenge playing out across the broader Middle East is more than a military conflict. It is the decisive ideological struggle of our time. On one side are those who believe in freedom and moderation. On the other side are extremists who kill the innocent, and have declared their intention to destroy our way of life. In the long run, the most realistic way to protect the American people is to provide a hopeful alternative to the hateful ideology of the enemy, by advancing liberty across a troubled region. It is in the interests of the United States to stand with the brave men and women who are risking their lives to claim their freedom, and to help them as they work to raise up just and hopeful societies across the Middle East."
3. It is this line that encompasses the Bush Doctrine, "... the advance of freedom is the calling of our time." I'm sorry Mr. Bush, but the calling of my time is to protect freedom right here in America.
And finally, what disturbed me the most was the president's last line, "We go forward with trust that the Author of Liberty will guide us through these trying hours." President Bush has plunged America into a struggle with two very self evident faces: A war for the control of oil distribution and A HOLY WAR.
The president's speech clearly told me it is his Christian fundamentalism versus Islamic fundamentalism, THAT is the "decisive ideological struggle" of which he speaks. His fundamentalism will be the death nail in my American freedom as I know it.

Why can't we listen to one of our greatest US Presidents and most respected Americans of all time, George Washington. President Washington said in his farewell address that we must be careful to guard against two issues. First, he urged Americans to avoid party politics. He warned this could weaken the unity of the American people. Second, he advised the US to remain neutral and avoid the affairs of other nations. Isn't it funny that 231 years later his words still have merit.

Student of the Past: I've quoted G.Washington so many times concerning "entangling alliances" but the American people do not get. Mostly though, the Republicans (and especially the neo-cons) don't understand. This republican (G.W.Bush) is a war mongering neo-con. He wants to "advance democracy" around the globe. What is really important as a refresher when bringing up G.Washington is to remind American that we do not live in a democracy. I do not know what this "democracy" is that Mr. Bush seems to be sharing with the world (while have thousands killed in the process). America is a republic, not a democracy. Mr. Bush doesn't even understand that, how will the rest of Americans?

I guess if Barbara Boxer doesn't want people to talk about her slam of Condi Rice not having kids, she should keep her mouth shut.
This pertains to VOD going on a 10 minute rant on her radio show about how everone is being so mean to Barbara Boxer. Dakota says people shouldn't twist around the fact that Barbara Boxer accused Condi Rice of not knowing anything about sending our troops into war when she doesn't have any kids.
Gotta open both eyes Dakota. That left eye is taking over again.

"Who pays the price? I'm not going to pay a personal price," Boxer said. "My kids are too old, and my grandchild is too young."
Then, to Rice: "You're not going to pay a particular price, as I understand it, with an immediate family."
If Boxer was setting back feminism as Tony Snow said with that comment, she's not doing a great job of being clear. Most would understand her to mean exactly what she said, that neither are paying a personal price in the war, rather than Condi and all women that are childless are incapable of intelligent thought.
Come on...I thought republicans were tough--sound waayyyyy toooo oversensitive and looking for reasons to have hurt feelers.
Buck up.

You are avoiding the issue. Barbie Boxer brought it up as a personal attack and now has you apologizing for her.

Nancy Pelosi shattered Congress's glass ceiling by becoming the first female Speaker of the House. Do you think there's anything a woman would do differently with the Presidency?
THE PRESIDENT: I think it depends on the individual, but there's no doubt in my mind a woman could do the job.
Mrs. Bush: I agree. But it isn't easy to live here. Dr. (Condoleezza) Rice, who I think would be a really good candidate, is not interested. Probably because she is single, her parents are no longer living, she's an only child. You need a very supportive family and supportive friends to have this job.
