Filipino Librarian

Gravatar nice blog you got here pare!

Gravatar Hi Von! I don't know too many librarians but I like ALL the librarians I know - count yourself in. Congratulations for doing this. I admire you first for your loyalty to your profession and second for the steadfastness with which you pursue your goal of making a difference in your profession and for showing all of us that librarians can make a difference.

Gravatar Hello, Von! You're soft-spoken pala.

It's nice to see someone who is proud of his profession -- and who would even prove his pride and joy in his work through a YouTube video! Your blog, as we readers already know, is definitely full of substance. You are, after all, our e-librarian at work.

As for the stereotype issue, here's my take on the matter: There will always be stereotypes in this world. People, who tend to make sweeping generalizations, will always be in the labeling business. And I think we have to live with that.

Librarians are often 'seen' as bespectacled, cranky, and unmarried ladies whose hair is always tied up in a bun (I look like the "typical librarian" myself...I could play that Biogesic part, actually). But what's wrong with this look, anyway?

News reporters are often regarded as media personnel who lack fashion sense (you know, those who go to press functions in shabby clothes) and even good ol' breeding.

And Filipino government employees will always be those uniformed, demotivated people who sell tocino, clothes, jewellery, and what-have-you in gives during office hours. And the list goes on.

My point is, sometimes it's better not to protest too much, and just to continue doing what you love doing. Who cares what others think anyway when you know you're on the right track? And you know you're on the right track, Von.

Meanwhile, I think your video is cool. For a while there, I thought it was one of those Iraqi kidnapping videos.

Gravatar Great video! I am happy to have met you!
As Jayred said before me it is nice to see someone who is proud about his profession.
Sometimes people are asking what they can do to change things in their country. They feel powerless.
You are a good example of what they should do. Excel in what you do, be an example for your community. Make the difference where you can.
The Philippines need more people like you !

Gravatar I discovered your site when I searched for libraries in Toronto which contain Filipiniana references. Somehow, your site was a hit in my search. I am still going through your archives and have not completely read all your posts but so far your blog is an interesting read and a good springboard for further research. I'm in Toronto, Canada and I'm in the process of luanching an ezine about our culture and I have the fear of not being able to have access to reference materials being very far from my subject. Knowing that there are sites like yours makes me think that this project is not entirely impossible. May I get your email address so that we can discuss this matter at length? May I also ask for your go signal to include your site as a link on my about-to-be-launched site? Thanks!

Gravatar Vonjobi, I have scanned your archives and find your your entries noteworthy. My fave is "Are We Poor Because We Are Catholic" because I am a (non-practicing) economist and found the attached papers very informative. Would like to ask more questions. Pls email me at cdnrose@gmail.com if you have some time. Thanks! Happy Weekend!

Gravatar jessica, "pare" talaga? should i call you "pare," too? =)

tita bugsy!!! "...for showing all of us that librarians can make a difference"? thanks for the kind words pero malayo pa. pakonti-konti. sana may nakikinig =)

jayred: kidnapping video? bwahaha! do i look that harassed? and i thought i was going to balance the image =)

sidney: i still feel powerless, but yes, it doesn't make sense to fret about the things i can't do anything about. it's better to focus on the things where i can make a difference--no matter how small. and by the way, we need more foreigners like you--who see both the good and the bad--in our country!

rose: that's a good project. i've emailed you already. see you in toronto!

Gravatar Hey,Von!

Great Speech!I really admire your loyalty, and you`ve changed some images of librarians,in a good way.
Well, shallow things,I may say,but you have proven that librarians really "are"not robots.

I wish you good luck.and more power!!

Gravatar von, bravo! i'm very proud of you, pare.

luckily, i've already met so many librarians here in the u.s. that i forgot about all the stereotypes you mentioned. hopefully, the philippines is on it's way to becoming more open-minded, thanks to you!

wishing you all the best in toronto!

-red

p.s. sorry for the isbn joke i made pre-conference. now, i feel really bad. hope i did not offend. peace, pare!

Gravatar Good job.
We are a group of French librarians fighting all thoses stereotypes, using the weapon of (sometimes sick) humour.

I put your tape on the blog.

Have a look !
