Filipino Librarian

Gravatar oohh.. nice..

actually, imho, it will continue to be one of the best as long as they cope with the developments of information technology.

Gravatar Happy New Year Von! Wishing you the best in 2007!

Gravatar Librarians are really in demand nowadays. But as far as salary is concerned.... :-(.

Gravatar nightfox: good point. i guess i just assumed that anyone reading my blog is already "digital."

asnsmls: long time no hear. hapinuyir!

maria: yup, salaries are a problem, but i'm not sure if we're "really in demand" yet. maybe when local reporters start writing about libraries as if librarians had something to do with setting them up.

Gravatar happy new year von!

this is certainly good news for the profession at least in the US and something which would likely be the same with other developed countries.

there is a shortage of librarians in the Philippines according to a BFL member but I think they can use these data you have here as leverage to entice students to take up the course. nothing excites a student more than the potential of working abroad. sad but true.

Gravatar hello von! my first time to sign here, after i met u from Baguio seminar! nice article and a good news to our clan. hope the mother association could bring this inevitable fact to the government as to give justice to our dignity and fair compensation for the librarians in the government sector.
take care and mabuhay ka!

Gravatar Yes sir. Librarians are becoming more important and needed as information grows to unmanageable proportions and users become more demanding of information that not only points to where information may be found but is already sythesized and repackage for them.

Librarians will become more important if our library education will include more courses on information literacy skills, research and social change marketing. Librarians should be in the market too on raising awareness for the need to develop information literacy among individuals. Afterall librarianship developed because of a need to store, organize, preserve and retrieve man's recorded knowledge. Library education prepared us for the technical aspects of information collection, organization and retrieval, we must now prepare our serves for social change marketing.

I have a friend who has just been recognized for her library work in developing countries. This is indeed an inspiring example of what librarians can do for the nation and the world.

Here is an excerpt about the press release for that reward:

We are delighted to offer our congratulations to Carol Priestley who has been awarded the Order of MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours list for her services to developing countries and emerging economies.

Carol has made an outstanding contribution to international development and is admired worldwide for her vision, energy and commitment. This has been most recently demonstrated during her 15-year period as founder director of the International Network for the Availability for Scientific Publications (INASP). But it has also been marked throughout a career that began in 1972 when she worked with Afghanistan's Ministry of Education, on a programme funded by the United National Development Programme (UNDP) to upgrade mathematics and science education.

Carol went on to take up a position in library and book development with the British Council, with assignments in Iran, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Egypt, before returning to the UK to work with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). In 1988 she was appointed Assistant Director of the International African Institute (IAI). It was in this position that she became even more acutely aware of the marginalisation of communities in developing countries due to the increasing challenges of libraries to support their information needs.

Through her ability to match the aspirations of developing countries with the interests and objectives of foundations and development agencies, Carol has become widely recognised as representing the very best in development practice. Her empathy with those striving to strengthen their national infrastructures, and her understanding of the need to secure the ownership of programmes by the individuals most directly affected by them, have helped to ensure the success of a series of partnerships that she has been responsible for nurturing.

Cheers!!

Lourdes David
