Yes, but this long-belated moment of minimal competence is about as interesting to the media as the plight of tens of thousands of Iraqis unjustly detained.

I can imagine it's very difficult for our troops to decide exactly who the bad guys are when they go into a location where they find a weapons stash and four families live at that location. That's why I think it's good that we've put troops in town where they get to know the local people who can help identify those that belong there and those that don't.
My best wishes to those over in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families who miss them over here.

Bruce, you're absolutely right. And when you think about the stress these guys go through--looking at every open window, every crowd and every piece of debris on the road as a potential threat, then seeing their friends killed or maimed, it's no wonder we arrest so many of the wrong people. This is another reason why we shouldn't get into guerrilla wars: they're not merely horrifying in the way that wars always are, they're horrifying in their complete unpredictability as well.
We should treat our soldiers with far more care and regard than we have been, which means knowing what we're getting into, weighing our options much more carefully, and going to war only as the last option. That's what "supporting the troops" really means.
