In close combat situations a shotgun is the most devastating firearm you can use. The wounds are truly horrendous.
Within 10' or less it really doesn't make a whole lot of difference what you use. At that range even birdshot will still be clustered fairly close together and when within a very short range any flesh it encounters will be excavated completely.
Aim for center mass (chest), do not attempt to shoot at the head. #8 shot will work very well in a variety of tactical situations within an occupied residence and the danger of over penetration decreases rapidly the further the shot travels.

There is a basic mistake in the comparison of surface area between the #00 and #1 loads. The 9 pellets of #00 are about 1.1 OZ. That load is being compared to a 16 pellet load of #1 buckshot that has a total weight of 1.5 oz. Comparing frontal area between those two loads is not a fair comparison.
A more equal comparison would be to a 12 pellet load of #1 shot that has the same weight of 1.1 oz. There the #1 shot only has a 10% greater frontal area of .85 Square inches if all pellets hit. The 9 pellet 00 load has .78 square inches. I don't think the difference is significant. What may be more significant is that you get three more pellets for the same recoil.
Unfortunately this mistake has been copied multiple times by various blog authors.
