I caught the tail end of this on the news. I cant believe our society.
Its the same thing with the current issue of home mortgages. Why is it society's responsibility to bail out people that over extended themselves because they are too concerned with keeping up with the "Jones"
I pay my bills. I live in a house that is within my means. I don't drive the fanciest car. But now I have to pay for mistakes made by greedy, irresponible home buyers.
The media makes a big deal out of this, but only 7% of homes are in foreclosure.
Let these people learn from their own mistakes.

I think she is entirely within her rights to sue, but needs to ammend her lawsuit to include her parents, who obviously passed on the addiction gene, the law school that graduated her and allowed her to earn the money to steal from her clients, in order to feed her addiction, the makers of the stools that were so comfortable that she was able to plant her addicted ass at the tables for days on end, and probably even the government that printed the money that allowed her to feed her addiction.
In fact I'm calling my lawyer right now because that link you set up expired and you peaked my interest, so I had to google the woman and wasted precious time that I could have used more productively. Please email your address so you can be served.

I go on rants about this topic, and I can't agree with you more. In y personal opinion this is the most relevant issue when we discuss the downfall of our nation. There are other influences, but the refusal to take responsibility for actions has extremely negative consequences.
I don;t know how to stop it even in my own home! I believe fully in taking responsibility. Over the years at work, if I made a mistake then I would go to my superiors and tell them I made one and what I was going to do to fix it. When my children have a less than acceptable grade in school it is always the teacher's fault, or the fault of the schedule or because they weren't told they would have a quiz.
I try to work them back to the root cause, that is, where THEY could have taken an action to interupt the other conditions - such as not waiting until the night before to study for a test, or asking me to help with some subject they don;t understand. I meet resistance. It seems as if it is easier to just blame it on someone else than to take the initiative and work a little harder or smarter.
They get it in the news, the television, from friends, and even from some teachers.
I have looked for that cord to pull that makes the world stop too......

I just got back from Vegas.
I think regardless of whether this suit is tossed or not, no casino anywhere should ever let her in from this point forward. Not so much because she has a problem but because they should just refuse her service for being a lowly excuse for personal responsibility.

Well I am new to your blog and I know I am a little behind on this topic but I just had to throw something out here. I loved what you said about hard work and responsibility in this country. I have been frustrated over the actions of even my own children. I have to take partial responsibilty for that. However, they see the less than desirable work ethics of their friends and other adults. They think that my husband and I owe them something. We have had to work twice as hard as my parents to make sure they understand that you have to earn things. By things I don't only mean possessions but also respect and privileges. I know that my husband and I have tried to set and example for them and we often wonder if they are even paying attention. I watched my mother and father work hard for our meager standard of living. Have I done my children a disservice by working hard to provide a higher quality of life? Kudos Wadical for you well stated points.

I agree with you completely about personal responsibility. When is your column on corporate responsibility due? I like all the comments about how we shouldn't bail people out from stupid decisions, but nary a word about bailing out corporations? Just wondering why that is? Could it be that you've all been drinking the conservative kool-aid for too long?
p.s. Bruce, you are a major league idiot with a capital I. What about all the money the financial sector is skimming off the economy...do you think that has a negative impact? Democrat=Communist, are you really that simple-minded? BTW, it's appears that you were a slacker in school since your grammar and spelling could use some help!
