Thanks for linking to that, it was good commentary.
I especially liked the most recent comment on this site, that someone from another country had bought an American flag for his girlfriend at home who discovered a care booklet in the package which said, "to dispose of your flag, burn it."
There was also the case of G.W. Bush siging his name on American flags. That's defacement, but it's apparently ok.
So what the amendment proponents are supporting is not the protection of the flag from destruction of defacement, they're supporting punishing people for having the wrong intentions. They want to put a thought crime into the Constitution.
