Are you sure this will help american understand Australian culture? While it is nice to think of a national holiday in honour of a biscuit, I do not really think ANZAC day is something one should trivialise.

Ah, the ANZAC biscuit, one of the finest little Australian snacks this side of the Sydney Opera House. They're good with a bit of vegemite smeared on top.
Glad to hear that you are bringing the ANZAC spirit to our friends across the lake. It is, however, a solumn occasion, and I'm not sure that the greeting of a "Happy ANZAC Day" is quite the right spirit - more likely a peaceful ANZAC Day, or a solemn ANZAC Day, or a reflective ANZAC Day.

Hahahaha... FUNNY POST, MAAAAAAN!
Don't listen to those losers who'll have a go at you for disrespecting the dead!
Laughing at the people who died fighting for their country is the AMERICAN WAY! IT IS A RIGHT, NOT A PRIVILEDGE, AND YOU SHOULD NOT LET THESE STINKING HIPPIES TAKE THAT AWAY FROM YOU! I look forward to many more highly-amusing posts... perhaps one where you spit in the face of a returned serviceman... "Have some spit, old man!"

Fortunately, all Americans are not like you - ANZAC Day has been mentioned with respect on several US blogs and hundreds of Americans have posted comments of support and friendship - so please fellow Aussies, dont judge Americans by this person.

Oh jesus, there is nothing to celebrate in this holiday, if you want to congradulate people on uselessly wasting their lives go to your local ghetto, the only contribution the australian military has ever truely made was in Kakoda and even that is debatable whether or not considering the USA may have intervened sooner if it hadn't been for the Australians there.

To the poster, we are the best at taking the piss out of ourselves and anyone else who deserves it. From this post, its obvious you wouldnt even know where to begin, so dont even try. To Bateman, only a complete tool would be moronic enough to disrespect the SAS. Hooah - what a joke, what is this? Black Hawk fucking Down? Your obviously a complete and utter wanker who cops it up the arse.To Ex-digger, i thought they would have taught you guys some military history while in the services. How can you say Kakoda was Australias only military contribution, and then cast that in doubt by bringing up US intervention - they did intervene by calling our hit and run fighting tactics cowardly, when in essence we developed "Jungle Warefare". Have you forgotten about Beersheba and the charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade, which some consider to be the turning point of World War 1. Please, lets not forget, and not disrespect, or belittle the efforts of this nation's fighting men and women who have stepped forward in times of need, and who have sacrificed so much. Lets try and learn from history for once.

As a serving member of the Australian Defence Force, I find your comment particularly offensive. I have served overseas, and I work hard to protect our Nation. Essentially, what you are doing by disrespecting our tradition is reaffirming the fact that America does not posses any Tradition or Culture.
My Great Grandfather served in WW1. My Grandfather in WW2 & my Father in Vietnam (a war that we should have never been in)my family is an ANZAC family - so by making your comments, you have not only disrespected the 19 million Australians for whom I serve to protect, but every single person who died in battle since Australia became a Nation in 1901.
It seems almost justifyable to fly planes into buildings when you show a total lack of respect for anyone elses country, let alone the fact that you live in OUR country.
If you wish to Trivialise anything, how bout we trivialise your President? Your National Rate of Obesity? Your lack of culture? Your ignorant arrogance? Your blind faith in your government? Oh, the list does go on.
ANZAC day is about turning a defeat into a victory, about coming together to fight for a just cause (and not for oil) about mateship & stoic heros - so before you continue on down your little 'Path To Ignorance'Show a little respect for our country - or get the fuck out.

Janey, you're an idiot. Your logic is shocking.
"Essentially, what you are doing by disrespecting our tradition is reaffirming the fact that America does not posses any Tradition or Culture."
First, even if a minor biscuit joke is "disrespecting our tradition," it is a logical non sequitur that this "is reaffirming the fact that America does not posses any Tradition or Culture."
Second, you write, "It seems almost justifyable [sic] to fly planes into buildings when you show a total lack of respect for anyone elses [sic] country..." Please explain how exactly a person being disrespectful almost justifies flying planes into buildings. I think if you shared this view with your commanding officer you might be sent for psychiatric evaluation.
Third, you write, "If you wish to Trivialise [sic] anything, how bout [sic] we trivialise your President? Your National [sic] Rate [sic] of Obesity [sic]? Your lack of culture? Your ignorant arrogance? Your blind faith in your government?" Yes! That will teach those nasty Americans! Let's make a president joke! Or a fat joke!
Finally, your grammar and spelling is appalling. I hope you're a better soldier than thinker.

I understand that you were trying to make a joke, but I think you should have used a little more sensitivity. You are making light of a tragic day that is very important to many Australians. In the same way that it's acceptable for me to complain about my family yet it's not acceptable for anyone else to do so, it is not acceptable for a non-Australian person to make jokes about a day we hold so dear. It implies a complete lack of understanding and respect.
ps: I have no idea what the current strengths of our respective armed forces or the September 11 attacks have to do with any of this.

Hi, W.C.
I just read your reply to my comment... inexplicably posted on a site that belongs neither to you, nor me. Anyway... I'd like to apologise for not understanding the intention of your post.
Had I known you were trying to be funny, I never would have used such phrases as, "FUNNY POST," "highly amusing" or "Laughing at the people who died fighting for their country."
One day I hope to understand these strange concepts of "irony" and "parody" and apply them inappropriately to solemn occasions myself!
Again, my apologies for obviously failing to understand that you were not seriously unaware of the meaning of the day, when you were actually joking about it.

Ahhh, of course, just like Thanksgiving is that day celebrating the eating of turkeys and stealing of native land (and yes, I'm well aware of the whole pot, kettle and black thing), or 4th of July is for setting off fire-crackers.
If this was a joke, then it was in poor taste about a tragedy that claimed most of the flower of Australian male youth, and serves as a day of respect for all Australian military lives lost anywhere. You sir are not doing anything to improve the view of Americans held here.

I'm disappointed on two fronts here. Firstly, the joke,(I'm sure that is what it was meant to be), was a poor one. Not because it trivialised an iconic Australian and New Zealand celebration of an event that went a long way towards nation building, but because it lacked depth. In effect, it was a poor joke. I doubt Americans would have seen the funny side of it or even the irony of it.
Secondly, I am disappointed at the lack of self-effacing humour displayed by the righteous Aussies that have commented on the joke.
Self-effacing humour used to be something we're proud of. It used to be that our reactions to something like this would have gone along the lines of:
This septic tank wouldn't know a good joke it bit him on the arse.
So to you, self-righteous Aussies, get off your high horses and don't come the raw prawn with your indignations.
The men that fought and died and Gallipoli died for more than glory. They died for our way of life. That means we take the piss out of septic tanks and don't take anyone too seriously, especially not anyone with airs and graces of superiority. Least of all drongos that think their humour is so good they think posting it on a web site such as this.
Take this as you might but remember how we take things........ thinking of which, I've a bucket filled with grains of salt for those of you thinking of getting hot behind the collar.

Dunno what is funnier; the fact that some fuckhole called bateman uses an internet blog comment section to talk up how tough he is, or the fact that so many of us wrote in to bitch about his obvious poor taste and ignorence.
K, it's plain and simple: To those who wrote in to put up an argument where this insensitive joke is acceptable- get over yourselves. It's so not cool to joke about death. I mean i'm as much of an asshole as the next guy; but there is a limit.
To all of the others who wrote in to comment on this assholes lame joke: Fo what? It's so obvious he doesnt understand it, why bother?
Bottom line: This is the internet and not really the most credible place to talk up how tough you are. So Bateman, you little pro yank son of a bitch...go find the asshole who slammed a plane into the building, then i'll take you and your little pro military mentality seriously- Others, just chill; honestly its a dog act to talk shit about it but a threat and comment over the internet? I think that the responses, with a few exceptions prove what racist assholes Aussies are toward Americans. Taking the piss out of Americans (or your tellie-informed perceptions of us) is the national sport there. Now you've all got your panties in a bind when some guy makes a bad joke. Americans are seen as the racists and chest-beating nationalists in the Aussie media, but I think that the opposite is true.
A guy that writes a silly joke about ANZAC day is the equivalent of an Aussie shitting on a grave at Arlington National Cemetary or flying planes into buildings to kill thusands of American civilians. With "friends" like Australians, who needs enemies? I wish that even one of you had the brass neck to say something like any of these hateful things to me in person, rather than hiding behind a keyboard.
