Ahhh, of course, just like Thanksgiving is that day celebrating the eating of turkeys and stealing of native land (and yes, I'm well aware of the whole pot, kettle and black thing), or 4th of July is for setting off fire-crackers.
If this was a joke, then it was in poor taste about a tragedy that claimed most of the flower of Australian male youth, and serves as a day of respect for all Australian military lives lost anywhere. You sir are not doing anything to improve the view of Americans held here.
I'm disappointed on two fronts here. Firstly, the joke,(I'm sure that is what it was meant to be), was a poor one. Not because it trivialised an iconic Australian and New Zealand celebration of an event that went a long way towards nation building, but because it lacked depth. In effect, it was a poor joke. I doubt Americans would have seen the funny side of it or even the irony of it.
Secondly, I am disappointed at the lack of self-effacing humour displayed by the righteous Aussies that have commented on the joke.
Self-effacing humour used to be something we're proud of. It used to be that our reactions to something like this would have gone along the lines of:
