I found your blog because I myself was confused about saving, so I thank you for posting how it is done. I just bought AC, and though I understand your complaints, I'm enjoying the game overall. But I think I know exactly what game you are looking for: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It won game of the year, and all I'm going to say about it is that I think you will absolutely love it. Rent it if you're unsure, but let me know what you think. (and yes, it is a standalone game...you don't need to have played the other elder scrolls.)
