Dude, that was some pretty shit writing there, I must admit. The sad thing is, Mat is one of my friends. We lived in the same hallway at Comstock for a year and chilled out quite a bit. We've hung out at a few parties since. He was always a nice guy and when he started writing for the Daily -- a good addition to the Op-Ed page. He used to write the sort of lazy, every-man sort of college student stuff that the Daily sometimes tries to eliminate in their futile quest to be a "respectable" newspaper in the city. You know, about how no one really cares about the homecoming parade, or how no one is buying the idea that fraternities are institutions that promote academics and gentlemanly conduct toward women. Nothing groundbreaking, but true nonetheless.
Unfortunately, it seems that his time in the University Avenue echo chamber seems to have warped his mind a bit. He's moved into full-on MNDaily mode: PROJECTION! DAMN THE MAN! The funny part is, as much as we hung out with me and my likewise conservative girlfriend, he'd never have suspected anything because, *GASP* I don't live up to his facile stereotypes of conservatives.
In a way, I'm not surprised. You'd be hard up to work for that rag and not come out shitting hammers and sickles. But still... I thought better of my old buddy. It's kinda sad.

I think you may have missed the point of Koehler's article. It was clearly satirical, but it seems like it was directed at an individual rather than the whole right-edge of conservatism. That said, he's not convincing anyone of anything, and there was no point to his column other than simply showcasing his misled liberal attitudes.
