Hubby and I faced this a few years ago (a.k.a right before child #1. I will wait for awhile, now that the beautiful bedding is covered in pee, spit-up, and wonderful pen drawings), but in any case, we watched the ads and kept our eyes out (as well as waited for coupon) and ended up getting that $500 set for $150. Oh yes, I have the receipt still!
