I totally agree. As a teacher, I think we should be looking at the results in a different way. Obviously the rise in passes means teaching and learning is improving and students are working harder to earn their grades.

I took the opportunity to look at the number of students who reached c or above in their maths exams; it stood at just under 50%. How can we contemplate exams are getting easier when we are failing half of the students in our schools.

We need to look at a different way of grading. I have been fortunate to listen to Mike Tomlinson and his views on a diploma system. The new system would mean that every child would work towards a minimum standard in maths and English. Those who wish to continue with more academic subjects can do so, as well as studying maths and English to a higher standard. Whilst those less academically minded will still works towards the minimum standard in Maths and English and can study practical subjects.

This, I believe, will have a positive effect on school discipline as students will more interested in the subjects they choose.

I completly agree. Having just got my A-level results, I know this system needs an overhaul.

If getting as little as 16% gets you a pass and 47%, an A grade, there has got to be something wrong. The first thing to do would be to fire Ruth Kelly and then to tell Blair that his City Acadamies are not working.
