Lib Dem Culture spokesman Don Foster MP has confirmed that his party would legalise drinking at the age of 16, in the following: |
Why is it that, whilst attitudes are so much against smoking, are we seeing a casual approach towards alcolhol? People are getting ever younger when it comes to binge consumption and by looking in today's local paper, a total of 977 youngsters between the ages of 10-17 were arrested in Hampshire for drunk and disorderly behaviour. You may not have realised Sandra but on the continent, people tend to have a drink with a meal, thus reducing the need to consume excess amounts. Over here, we see happy hours promotions and bars with standing areas only, therefore encouraging this problem. Then there are the supermarkets. If they get their own way and are allowed to sell alcohol twenty-four hours a day then god knows what will happen. It will only add to the billions of pounds wasted on police and health service resources in dealing with this problem and more on our taxes. The drinks industry has clearly palmed off the government in getting their own way. It's about time you and everyone else woke up to this problem and start sorting it out now. |
Clive - for once I agree with you absolutely - but would like to point out to others that it is not L D policy to lower drinking age to 16 - despite what Don Foster says |
I don't know what Mr Foster said over this matter as I haven't commented on his views. Why not instead campaign for the drinking age to be twenty-one, like the US, banning the drinking of alcohol in the street and start by restricting alcohol advertising back to what it once was i.e banning spirits from TV. At least I am offering some options in dealing with this potentially huge problem that is facing our society, which is more than what certain people like Tessa Jowell are doing right now. |
Is that the same Don Foster (sounds like a Mafia beer estate baron in Australia)who pontificated about 4WD vehicles and was thrice denied by the Liberals. When WILL they sing from the same hymn sheet? |
Think the 4WD comments were their environment spokesman Norman Baker - wanted to ban some types of vehicles from supermarket car parks and from school runs. That wasn't "policy" either apparently, just their environment spokesman giving comments on the environment on their own party website and in the media. Question is, when is a lib dem spokesman talking about policy actually talking about policy? |
Yes, what is their policy? All I read is that the drinking age should be lowered to sixteen. But in reality, it's a lot lower than that. As young as ten seems to be the case according to the local papers. |
I am interested as to what the policy is, as the quote was taken from Hansard, it was the Lib Dems official spokesman on the issue who said it, and yet Mrs Gidley says it is not the policy. Seems curious. |
Although I am a proud member of the Liberal Democrats, I am slightly upset that we seem to be becoming ever more populist, and ever less liberal. |
It is worth pointing out many European countries have a drinking age of 16, yet they have considerably less of a drinking problem than we do. |
With the last comment, why do we always have to look at other European countries when we have acute problems of our own to sort out? Over there, a drink is often consumed with a meal but over here we have happy hours, marketing aimed at younger people, masses of theme bars with standing only areas and a huge waste of police and hospital resources. I for one am opposed to any extension of opening hours as there is clearly no agenda in dealing with the mess that has been created out of alcohol misuse. |
Does the current Member for Romsey have anything further to add to this 'debate',or is her attention diverted by more pressing matters? |
Why in North Baddesley does the parish council provide a low cost drinking place? |
