I, too, am strongly in favor of legal immigration. Lotsa reasons, but chief is security--having at least some idea of who's coming in and where they're going, what they're gonna do, etc.

As for, "If anyone realistically thinks we can get rid of 12 million illegals, or ever 1/4 of that number, I think they've been sniffing the anti-freeze again."

Sorry, bub. We have the means to do that job, just not the cojones. And further means that would not in any way violate any human (NOT civil) rights wouldn't be hard to implement should the US develop the stones for it.

1.) Rigorously enforce the laws we now have.
2.) Make it a jailable offense to employ illegals. A felony with serious hard time and fines attached.
3.) Offer CITIZENS a $2,000 bounty on all illegals turned in (after thorough investigation to make sure the citizen hasn't been any part of the importation or employment of illegals) and a $10,000 bounty for ratting out an employer of illegals. Build in a few more safeguards to deter abuse, of course.
4.) REFUSE social services to illegals. Period. No schools, no free health care, nothing. Zilch. Zero with the rim kicked off.
5.) Give violent criminals who are here illegally a mostly-functioning parachute (try at least to give 'em one that works) and drop 'em over their country of origin, somewhere.

(OK, that last one might be stretching it a bit. Then again, I'd be tempted to drop illegal Islamics w/o the parachute... )

With

a.) no jobs
b.) no one willing to pay the $500,000, $1,000,000 and up fines and 5 to 10 years mandated jail time to provide such jobs
c.) citizens willing to make a good years' income in a week or two...
d.) no freebies

I'd say we could have the i9llegal population knocked down to a statistically insignificant number in no time.

As for border control, we HAVE the technology to lock our borders TIGHT. And it'd be less expensive than having the illegals here. (Economic arguments for amnesty or comtinued presence of illegal aliens are all either fatuous lies or willfully ignorant hot air.)
