Gravatar I think you're missing the point of the study. The idea is that if we weighed the same as we did in 1960 and were DRIVING TODAY'S CARS, then we would consume 1 billion less gallons per year (or whatever the exact number is). The researchers acknowledged that cars get more mileage than ever before, but they proved that humans don't.

In fact, that's right here in this line, which you quoted:

"...about 1 billion gallons more annually, in fact, than they would if drivers today weighed the same as drivers did in 1960."

Sorry to be snarky, but for not even reading the story you attacked, perhaps you should be the knucklehead of the day.
