The streets are a horrible place to race. There is just too much distraction on the streets, too many hazards, and too much danger to others.
Racing belongs on racetracks, and even then it's dangerous. Every time a racer goes to the track they have to sign a waiver in case of accidental death. That should sober most people up right there.
At the track, cars are inspected to insure that they are safe to race. Safety equipment must be current and up to date, and track officials won't even allow you to approach the starting line if you aren't in compliance, and properly strapped in.
You have none of this emphasis on safety when street racing. It's a shame that there isn't a good track available near Palm Beach. If there were, it would have been less likely that these kids would have been racing on the street.
I feel sorry for the families of these kids. I also feel sorry for the kids who feel compelled to race on the streets for lack of a better venue.
