Dear Mr./Ms. "Reed",

While I can't comment on my talent or lack thereof as a newstalker--that's your and other listeners' call, not mine--I can certainly correct you factually.

Whatever the shortcomings of my work--and you might be surprised to learn that I share some of your criticisms, if not your cynicism and mean-spiritedness--I do not beg for calls, at KIRO or previously in my talk radio career stretching back sixteen years at ten stations in six major markets, including Detroit and Chicago.

It so happens that I am quite capable of going the entire four hours without taking a single call, and depending upon the quality of the incoming contributions, I sometimes might actually prefer that. Certainly in the past at smaller stations--most notably in suburban Detroit, and while doing morning-drive at the also-ran newstalk station in Albuquerque [whereas my afternoon-drive show was never lacking for input], I often had no calls and was quite content to "riff" on the news as I do.

And that, it turns out, is precisely why you seem to misunderstand the point of my newstalk style. A previous posting of yours wondered why I don't dwell upon a single subject long enough to generate calls on it, erroneously supposing that that was somehow indicative of my ignorance of the proper way to do newstalk.

While "topic-driven" newstalk radio indeed is what probably 97% of my colleagues around the country do, I for various reasons eschew it, preferring an old-school type of open-line newstalk that, while nowadays nearly-extinct, more respects the intelligence of both the listener and potential callers, as well as providing a vastly more kaleidoscopic broadcast (as opposed to merely taking a stand on some national or local issue and inviting callers' opinions).

Instead, in my feeble-minded way, I elect to comment briefly or at length on the news amid my drawing upon history (back to ancient times and through the Middle Ages to the modern era) and the entire annals of Western science and the arts to constitute a running commentary that is less ideological and more, I hope, enlightening. This provides the listener with a panoply of factual subject matter that regular listeners are confident, however uninterested they may be with the current item being covered, will soon enough move on to the next area, which they realize might be right down their alley.

If a caller has a point to make about anything I've said, they make air, but UNLESS they make a point, they either won't be on long or maybe at all. And as I frequently explain to my listeners, I'm much more covetous of callers who completely change the subject (for the same reason cited in the above paragraph)...but ONLY if they've got a point to make. Too many talk radio callers just want to be heard on the radio, rather than make some point large or small, and that's something I have to factor in every moment I'm doing calls.

One other factu

Gravatar [This blog's small text-limitation truncated my exposition, obviously; I continue from the last fully-posted paragraph]

One other factual mistake you made: Neither at KIRO, nor at the one other world-class "heritage" station (WJR/Detroit 1993-96) at which I've been privileged to discuss "everything from astronomy to zoology", have I lacked for calls, even while doing overnights. (The sole exception is on the Sunday night/Monday morning overnight slot here at KIRO, where my influx is certainly diminished but by no means virtually nil.) Indeed, at WJR I was known as the only overnight host who knew how to light up the phones...except that even there I never really tried to do so per se--my fully-lit caller-board there was always merely just a natural consequence of my uncommon newstalk style.

You may be dismayed to learn that this admittedly-quirky style is now finding a substantial audience at KIRO, and I of course remain grateful to management for giving this very different approach a chance.

Of course, I'm sure all of this is besides the point to you. In your pseudononymous view, I'm apparently just some goofball who somehow persuaded ten program directors to diminish their stations' line-ups by putting me on the air. But at least my audience--unlike yours--knows my real name.

Sincerely,
BRYAN STYBLE/Seattle

Gravatar I found your blog after search "Bryan Styble". Living in Alberta, I can, on rare occasions in the wee hours of the morning, pick up a clear KIRO signal.
Perhaps I listen to a different Bryan Styble than you do, but I found him to be THE most intelligent, engaging talk show host I have ever listened to, and I am a talk radio junkie.
When I was self obessed I had a blog, and I loved to get comments. I see you don't get many, so here is one for you.
Too bad your following isn't as large as Bryan Styble's.

Gravatar Um - thanks, I guess - I'm not exactly self-obsessed though - otherwise I'd probably be writing about myself, and not everybody's favorite broadcaster, Mr. Styble.

I think we've found your future Bryan - you should move to Alberta! You already have a larger following there than in Seattle!

Seriously though - my critiques of Bryan's work are just that - and not meant as personal attacks in any way. I'm sure he's a great guy - I just happen to think he's better suited for aucioneering than talk-show-hosting.

And who moves to a mid-size market for a part-time fill-in job anyways? Seems kind of weird.

Gravatar I don't follow Seattle radio much, and would probably get way bored with all the talk about who's getting what ratings anyway, but I would like to comment about Bryan Styble. I spend more time trying to find him on the radio than I do mindlessly listening to the radio hoping for something intelligent to be said. His description of what he does -- a free form discussion with the only holds barred are ones that keep the it rational -- is absolutely right on. He is unique in the broadcast biz for that reason, perhaps the only true intellectual left on the air in this country. I don't agree with him much, but he aims high in what he does on the air, which does seem to be more than what I can say about this blog site.

Gravatar Styble is a much better talk show host than critics give him credit for. He is far better than either erin hart or mike webb ever was. With bryan styble, he allows you to finish your statement, and if you are running close to a break, he will even ask you for a CONCLUDING STATEMENT ... with erin hart and with mike webb, both had this mildly annoying tactic of shouting over you, and cutting you off. Here's wishing bryan styble a long and good season of work at kiro.
