I wouldn't think this was so bad if her daughter was over 18. She should NOT be smoking and Melanie should not allow it in her presence. She is underage and can not even legally buy her own pack of smokes. IF her daughter wants to smoke, I'm sure she can't stop her but there is a line parents need to draw and not just accept it.

I'm sorry but no no no no no. Smokers lost their "right" to smoke in public. They are selfish and polute the air we all have to breath. Really there only is one place where it is ok to smoke and that is hell where you can't kill other people with your selfish destructive ways. There is ONLY one good thing about smoking and that is it keeps you thin but maybe a better way to keep thin is a little self control so that you stay away from the fattening foods.

The difference between the addiction to smoking cigs (or pot, or meth, or anything that can float around in the air and affect those around you) and the addiction of things like fast food, alcohol, nail biting, etc... is that it can harm people in your presence. Then you are making choices for them and that's not right. Sure, they can choose to remove themselves from your presence, but that means you are now controlling them in a way. I am an ex smoker (6 years, many many MANY attempts at quitting before I actually was able to) and I now look at smokers and feel sorry for them. I was able to overcome the addiction to that as well as a few other harmful things. I gave up on quitting so many times, but then brought myself back to trying until it happened. If I can do it, anyone can. I know some people are content with being smokers and knowing the health consequenses. I believe those of us who don't smoke aren't looking down on people like that. We just don't want to have to be affected by what they are doing. Seeing a mother light her teenage daughter's cig is disturbing to some and makes me personally realize how low society's standards have dropped. I say live and let live, but at the same time don't act surprised when someone questions the fact that you are defending a deadly habit, and a mother who doesn't seem to give a crap about what it will do to her own daughter.

haven't we been educated that smoking causes lung cancer and it's not glamorous? smokers affect not only themselves but those around them that have to breathe second hand smoke, and no, good parenting does not mean "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" if her kid wants to smoke, Melanie shouldn't be encouraging it. you don't want them sharing cigs now and oxygen tanks later.
