Say, whore, UniScorn is so much better.

I get the whole "we are all made of the same organic material" stuff. But at the same time tradition, and holding yourself to a higher standard, is what makes people achieve things that they didnt know they could. When a person is face to face with winning and excellence and records and past presure, that person feels he has to work even harder to keep it up. On every level in every sport dynasties emerge. Is it becasue they have th best players? could be, or is it because the best players want to play for winners? or is becasue the players there work harder "expecting" to be winners? No teams dont win simply because they have a certain name, but i think tradtion of winning is contegious, as a is a tradition of lossing. Which is why pixie dust to change fortunes are so important to the mind set of players... do baseball player superstitions actually make players play better? of course not, but does it effect their confidence level which inturns effects performace? of course...

oh yeah, and i was first....

gsimms,

I think I totally agree with what you're saying. I guess what I'm saying is that saying something like "We're 'Michigan Men', we're better," isn't the same thing as holding yourself to a higher standard. "Michigan Men" like Gary Moeller getting in a bar fight, Larry Harrison flashing himself in public, Kevin Grady blowing a 1678% BAC didn't exactly hold themselves to high standards, at least for parts of their lives. The fact, I think, is that being a "Michigan Man" wasn't going to stop Brian Griese from pissing on the law quad, or Robert Traylor from getting a Suburban bought for him. Who they, as people, were, and their own sense of integrity does that. And attending Michigan does not, at least in my opinion, give you more integrity than anyone else.

ur right it doesnt. But when im surrounded by good people who think that certain things are wrong, and i resepct them and feel kinship with them, i myself try to adhere to their morals more than i would if i were surrounded by bad people. I guess what im trying to say is grady was an idiot, but IMO, being at michigan keeps him from doing as many stupid things as he would have done had he gone to say OSU.

but yeah i get what your saying... and you are right, people arent better simply becasue they are michigan men. But i can tell you this, i acted a lot different at harding, then i would have had i accept the invite to ferris state.

and....

I would have punched the doomer in the face.

Troy Smith got suspended for improper contact with an agent in 2006. In 1998, Marcus Ray was suspended for improper contact with an agent, and taking gifts.

Andy Katzenmoyer was kept eligible by taking BS classes like Golf. The Ann Arbor News documented that we funnel atheletes through the same bullshit "study skills" classes.

Maurice Clarett (setting aside his later larger problems) took money and bribes to go to OSU. Fab Five, etc., etc.

Antonio Henton solicited a hooker. Larry Harrison flashed large groups of women, and Will Peterson was expelled for stealing a strippers wallet when she wouldn't blow him.

I guess I have a hard time playing a "Michigan Man" moral superiority card.

well you are right i guess,

i mean it is the person that makes the mistake not the institution.... maybe michigan isnt any better than anywhere else. My experience with michigan is as a fan only. I do no that surroundings mold individuals, but michigan isnt any different than any other place. I will bow to your expertise and your argument.

Entering an institution/team/whatever and then working to meet the expectations of people who also worked very hard before you is good. That is what makes a winning tradition. You see it all the time at the high school level especially. The, coincidentally, catholic high school in my town is absurdly dominant in football. It isn't because the kids that go there are any better athletically inherently, but because the teams before them set a standard of hard work and expectations.

That is all fine.

Now, that tradition crumbles when and if a class of kids comes through the school that says fuck all the work, we're LC, and we're going to win because we're LC. If they expect to win because of who they are instead of expecting to win because of how hard they worked, you have Michigan losing to App. State.

And as fans, it's entirely ridiculous to believe that donning a certain jersey gives someone super powers. It's all up to the individual to work hard to earn the "Michigan Man" label or whatever.

thats why you guys are the intellectual giants, and im just the dumb coach.

We are making the same points.

I will add this though. The App game could have happend to anyone. I dont htink it was a case of "we are michigan" as much as it was a case of, "we are a top 5 team, and they are 1-aa". Couple that with the fact that Lloyd was notorious for being ultra conservative, and predictable, coupled with the fact that we were not well coached fundamentally playing against a team with speed at the skill positions. It was a perfect storm. Its impossible for any team to emotionally be at the same place game in amd game out. There will be times in any program where a team will take the field expecting to win, emotionally the other team will be more ready. Skill, fundamentalls and game coaching descions will bring you to victory in those situations.

If you were to challenge me to a bench press competiton in 2 weeks, i guarntee you, you would out work me and be more prepared then me, becasue i would be expecting to win. Now if my boy six, the 475 max guy challenged me, i would work a lot harder knowing i had to in order to compete.

I know that is not the point of your article Chi. Dorry if i got off topic.

I agree with you - I think we're essentially in agreement, and still arguing about it. Largely, because I'm an asshole.

If I out-bench you do I get your car?

sure, and my wife, house, and kids...

chitown, your not an asshole, at least from what i can tell. Seems to me that most agressive posters are really nice people in real life. I on the other hand, deal with yelling shouting, cussing, fighting competing, etc. everyday, so my posting style reflects my desire to just get along with people on the internet. Thats the other reason you wont see me involved in the political, historical, moral, etc. aspects of these boards that alot of you guys like to talk about... mainly becasue im an APUSH and Civics instructer. I have to talk about that shit all the time, i dont want to talk about it on here!

Ninja/Dex:

I read a post on Mgo where you said Cone was likely the opening starter and that RR was keeping it secret. Were you being serious or just trying to get a "sky falling" response?

Definitely fucking with them

thats why you guys are the intellectual giants

i spend my lunch break writing profanity laced imaginary chat conversations between college football players and checking my fantasy baseball team - i'm not sure "intellectual giant" is how i would describe myself
