After my initial reaction of shock, disgust, and petty anger I've started to come around though. The diary is a neat feature, the board will be pretty good in the long run, and it does appear to have cut down on the amount of shit to go through. I still can't help but wish Brian would have added the new features but kept HaloScan for it's anything goes atmosphere, but oh well.
I wish the board was more segmented. Brian should just implement sections. Right now, its just open discussion. Basically, diaries under a new name, not tracked to a user's "space". I'd rather see Football, Basketball, Baseball, Tigers, Off Topic, General, Help, Barwis Love, Geek Stuff, etc. spaces. I'd create a room named Haloscan and always post there.
Write that and tell him. I think it's a terrific suggestion.

Proper tagging should accomplish what you're talking about, at least for diaries...though I say that without having actually done much experimentation on the new MGoBlog site. It's just been my experience on another well known blog that runs on Drupal that people can "label" their diaries with tags, and that enables everyone to do some good searching and only read the diaries on topics that interest them.
The problems are the tags and search are so uninformative. I think it just needs to be clearly stated what the sections are. I'm liking the diaries more and more, but rarely check out the mgoboard. If i wanted to go see what Jay is bitching about regarding the Tigers, with the proper section, this could be done easily.
One thing that I've enjoyed is being able to blissfully ignore some of the more retarded stuff. The posts like "omg rich start feagin hes the awesome" don't matter anymore since it's more work to respond to them now.
I feel like while the community is going to grow by leaps and bounds with the new forms of participation, it's also going to be more fragmented into little groups.
My issue is that there were a number of poster whom I enjoyed (eerily, most of you are here, too): dex, BGH, Huss, MRG, Musketrebellion, Maize4Blue, Other Chris, Ninja Football, etc...
Now, I worry that I'm missing all of their hilarity.

Is it weird that I feel bad for cursing on the new mgoblog site? The combination of registration and general openness has caused me to question my Internet cursing. Dex, I see you have no problem with it. Teach me your ways!
At first I was hesitant because I feel like more people, and thus more sensitive people, would be reading. But then you just have to say damn a few times to break the ice and you are all set.
There's definitely more fuel for mockery now - idiots have popped out of the wod work ad finitum since the change-over. Like the cock-knocker who claimed that Michigan would never have a good defense again. Or the guy that said that hands are an "intangible" skill, then bitched about Daniel criticizing "grammar".

I just have a hard time following any conversations on the new site. Its nice to see that there is a lot of new content and more interaction; however there is less consistancy and dick jokes. Common bgh! I also miss the days of ranting. It seems like 80% of the people who post on the site now are the delusional Michigan fans. I want more substance, not more tip kissing.
Another positive - a decent diary entry will get 7x as many hits as my own blog in one day.

BHG, super serious bloggers? I think those people just thought they had a great forum to discuss and rediscuss everything Michigan. While the MZone was great, it was archaic. Don't get me wrong, the guy did a great job. He knew that a lot of people came to his site regularly. To use a bad pun, he didn't do anything to his site to get it out of the Carr era. Brian did his RR-hire by revamping the site.

I liked MZone enough and I think he did a nice job. They did seem to be a little less apt to accept edgy humor, though. And by edgy humor, I just mean the art of saying things that make my mother regret giving birth to me.

Don't take anything I say too hard here. I'm actually really enjoying the new setup there and their are a lot of good posters that have started contributing now. But it's much more fun to focus on the completely insane ones who have come out of the woodwork .

Dex-I was feeling pretty awful about everything you've been saying, but then I spent this afternoon at work reading short stories on BGH's blog. Shitting the bed and bedroom and bathroom. Burning down one's own house while trying to kill wasps. All of a sudden life didn't seem so bad.
Seriously though, even from just being a lurker on the old site I fell into the mindset that only about 10 people read MGoBlog. Then suddenly there seemed to be thousands. And like you said, the format is damn hard to hide in the office. Weirdness.
It's weird. I'd look at the sitemeter stats and see that thousands and thousands of people were visiting a month, and the fact there were only 400 comments on a post surprised me, considering the ease of posting to HaloScan.
I'm learning to get around the work thing. Just gotta be quick.

BGH-What can I say, I did my share of creative writing courses and was a literature major in undergrad (before selling it all out to go for the law degree). I enjoy reading people's writing, especially when it isn't the usual treacly garbage, has a narrator whose tone shifts crazily, and utilizes a big vocabulary and stretches its meaning.
Also, did you know that "Tokoyo" means "land of eternal life?" Now you do.
I guess what I meant to say is that I am totally homosexual for your blog posts.
I like the new jerseys. Not that they are much different from the old ones, but we all knew they wouldn't change much. I'll probably get a jersey for the first time (yay being employed after college and being able to spend $$$ on an overpriced polyester shell!)

Tokoyo - Well, thanks. I've never taken a creative writing course and never will, I just read a lot of books and enjoy writing. The purpose of the blog, in part, was to force myself to write on a regular basis. I'm something of a perfectionist and, in the past, I've written prolifically only to then delete said work - in its totality - because it wasn't what I wanted to be. This has led to immediate regret on my part more than once. Also, I did not knopw what Tokoyo meant, although I love Asians. I worked with a girl from japan and we used to set up boxes like Skyscrapers and knock the over as we re-created the Godzilla vs Mothra battle.
Chitown - I'm going to school for Media/Journalism/Communication Studies. My particular research interest is digital media and technology and how it can be applied towards improving public health in disaster-type situations. SDSU gave me a research grant to study this stuff, so that's why I'm headed out there. My creative writing is merely a release from day-to-day stress.
Dex and Maize4Blue - I agree, the new jersey look good. People were whining about nothing. What is it, with sports fans, that makes them jump to every possible negative conclusion? I don't get it. And, I can't fathom a world were the piping on the away jerseys has any bearing on, literally, anything. I mean, when the Pistons wen't to those god-awful uniforms with the half stallion/half dual exhuast system design, I didn't like them any less.

Maize4Blue: Well, perhaps not those specifice sites, but similiar- type tools. Being that I'll be working with a variety of representatives from the traditional media oligarchs, my operative assumption is that I'll be researching ways to implement new media tools into the broader spectrum of mass news media. Even though newspapers, in their paper forms, are dying out, people still trust certain names for content. But, as we all know, the news media is stuggling to keep up with the pace of new media which creates a situation where we have existing sources of distibution and existing readership populations but content that is limited by technology.
A lot of this is still up in the air. I know I'll be given a lot of freedom, but I also know that I'll still have benchmarks that the University will require me to meet.
Sounds good. I'm hoping you'll write about your experiences (as you can). I would enjoy reading about it. Certainly I think its a hot topic and could yield strong results. Good luck.
