Wow!!!!
In all the years since Sept. 11, this is the first time that I've seen anybody say anything about Russia. It seems to make sense though. I'm going to go read the book.

I disagree.
As far as I am aware the Jihad movements including Al Qaida have earned their first successes in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union. I seem to remember that the US is blamed for creating the Muhadjedeen ... Beslan comes to mind.
Russia today may still dream the imperialist dream which is not wedded to Communist ideology but was alive and kicking also before, see "The Big Game" with Great Britain instead of the USA today.
However, they certainly lack the demography needed and in my opinion they also lack the ideology. Political Islam has both...
There are definitely collusions between Russia and terror organisations and/or terror sponsoring regimes. Russia "owning them" seems to be exaggerated all the same.
