Always carry at least one spare set of keys, and carry then on the same ring as your house key.
When I was dispatching I once lost my only set of bike keys in Glasgow, and as I live in Kent, that was not fun.

Car shared into Central London, leaving my car parked in Rickmansworth for a week.
Got back to my car at 4:30pm on a Friday, realising I left my car keys at the Holiday Inn, Kings Cross, identifiable by the distinctive Gromit keyfob.
Got the keys biked out to me while I waited in the office drinking coffee. Three hours later the security guy was itching to get on with his weekend and asked when I would be leaving. 'When the courier turns up with my car keys' I replied and he suggested I gave them a call which I did. They told me they were delivered in a jiffy bag two hours previous and signed for by the very same security fella, who thought the package was for someone else with a similar name.
Cost me (or rather my expenses account) £180.00 for the courier. I worked for a brewery, its no wonder beer is so expensive.
