This camera is catching people who are breaking the law; what's the problem?

The problem is that the camera was hidden when they're supposed to be a high visibility deterrent and speed cameras only catch people speeding but not drunk drivers, inattentive drivers, bad drivers, etc.

Yes, they do catch people breaking the law. The law does say that in sentencing various factors should be considered including ability of the driver, location and conditions. The problem, of course, is not only that the camera can't take any of these into account but the prospect of having to pay a higher fine if you wish to exercise your right to defend yourself robs most people of justice. Like I said, speeding isn't dangerous, driving too fast is. Speed cameras can't judge whether someone is safely speeding or unsafely driving too fast.

Speeding isn't dangerous if you are an arrogant plod in a sooped up unmarked police car. He can therefore travel at 86mph in a 30mph zone and a very reasonable 156mph on a 70mph stretch of road.....

That's true, but more to the point, it usually isn't safe to drive at *29mph* in a 30mph limit outside a school at 3pm on a Monday afternoon in term time - it's still driving too fast despite being within the law.

As for "Chapterhouse's" view of the law, would he/she also suggest that applying the full weight of the "Theft Act" to someone who'd taken a few paperclips and a Biro home from work as an equally good idea? After all, they are technically breaking the law, just like speeding motorists.
