You have to wonder if the New Yorker cover was a pre-initiation stunt.

Way better than any joke I had. AKA's are taking over the District of Columbia this week. It's intense.

Seriously, if Sig Ep engendered anything near the kind of lifelong committment from its members that any of the "Divine Nine" have we would not be worried about lack of Volunteers, declining greek membership, or any of the other dire predictions we hear.

Having worked at an HBCU and with an expert, Dr. Walter Kimbrough, the divine nine face many more problems than SigEp. Look for Black Greek 101 by Dr. Kimbrough, Dr. Ron Binder wrote an introduction.
The divine nine focus on the alumni experience and not on the undergraduate experience. There has been an idea floated that they eliminate the undergraduate chapters as they pose so much risk to the national organizations. (This will never happen, IMHO).
Having loyal alumni does not necessarily equate large number of volunteers. Our VP of Student Affairs struggled to find almuni to volunteer with the fraternities on campus. She even turned to me to volunteer with one group.

We added "Black History 101 to the list of items displayed in the "S&P Recommends" widget.
Whatever the reason, you have to be impressed that a Greek letter organization can attract 25,000 members to, well, to anything. http://tinyurl.com/5bu9o3
That is more than our last 15 Conclaves combined (i.e. 30 years for those counting at home)!
