Do you need a GPS unit? Or will a simple map-&-compass do?

This is quite the activity around here - but not in the summer. For some reason, all the Geocachers want to try out the more northern spots once the thermometer hits 110 or so...

I've heard of this before, we simply call it treasure hunting. Sounds like a good time. And anything other then politics, I agree!!
I'd rather gone the more expensive get out door activity. You'll see me this weekend watching Danica Patrick live on ABC!
You are on the right track though. I think my brother did a few too, of these.

Gunny, this sounds really interesting. I've been looking for a new hobby; maybe I'll check it out!

There are some youngsters in our home school group that have been involved with this activity. Mrs Gawfer presented the idea to me, but I must admit, it did not sound appealing in the least bit.
But as the gunny is now a spokesman for it, I may aquiesce to Mrs Gawfer and give it a try... maybe

I had checked out the site previously, when recommended by a home school family (back when I was actually involved in home schooling....sigh).
Welp, I finally signed up. YOUR fault!
I have a pretty good idea where the first few caches are located in my area. Gotta question though, do I have to have a GPS or some such silly thing? Cuz I ain't buyin' one!

LOL There are some rather tech challenged folks in my hood, a couple of them got Garmins and other GPS tools for Christmas last year and I had to show them how to use it, I did a couple of those "hunts' with a group of folks during the winter, but with Gas prices being what they are driving around in 100+ heat is not in the plans...
Hey JJ aren't you on a tiny island? I mean you pretty much can walk around the island in an hour right? LOL

Hey, maybe I could place a few items in and around my favorite hiking spots?? It'd take some work to find them though. Lots of uphill hiking, huffing and puffing, etc. It'd be fun to start a hiking Geocache. Is there any such thing out there already? I could add them to the local peaks and mountains in southern California.

Thanks everybody!
To answer a couple of folks, no, you don't absolutely have to have a GPS, but the majority of the caches will probably elude you if you don't have one. You can usually find the spot on a map (google maps work pretty good), and that will typically get you close.
Sues, yeah, many of the caches already involve hiking, so hiding them in the vicinity of popular hiking venues would probably be a big hit. They even have difficulty and terrain ratings for tough hikes and such.

This is great fun and you can do it at many levels. A few weeks ago we took a group of 5 year olds on just such a trip sponsored by the Fort Worth Museun of Science & History. We had a blast!

Kate, you might want to buy one. You can buy used ones on gecaching.com 's website in the forums. Heck; they're a wise investment anyway, since they can navigate you through strange cities nowadays. Just a thought.
