My Grandpa was a medic during WWII there. It would be kind of interesting to see with him, but I'm afraid it's to late to do that with him

Dakotaranger, when you say "medic," I think Army.
That reminds me of a film clip I saw, where a vet talking about his friends, and says:
"I told them I fought in the pacific in WWII, and they asked if I was a Marine. I says no. They asked if I was Navy, and I says no; I was Army. They then asked if I really fought in the pacific and I says, 'You're damned right I did.'"
Everyone thinks that only Marines and Sailors fought in the pacific in WWII. Was your Grandpa in the Army?

Yeah, he was in the Army, but I can't remember off the top of my head what unit he was with.
The few times I've talked to him about it he told how the Conscious Objectors who were medics were upset that he accept the 1911 when it was offered to him.

I remember the tour - it wasn't exactly promoted real well at the time, you had to know somebody who knew somebody who knew the right people to ask - and it really kicked off my interest in the history of WWII Pacific battle sites.
It also helped that we did a lot of island-hopping training, and got to visit quite a few of the old battlegrounds.
Good pics, John - thanks for the memory tickler!

That sounds like a really neat experience. I can't even begin to imagine the horrors our boys experienced while taking those islands.

Once again, it’s awesome to see my 'old home'.
I don't know if I mentioned it before John, but my uncle fought in the battle of Okinawa, US Army, and received both the Purple Heart and The Bronze Star with cluster. Like your father, his records were destroyed during the fire that occurred in Missouri I believe, and he has since past away, so the efforts to uncover the history of the awards made by my cousin have proven to be futile.
One can only imagine what took place on that island Cary and I called home and you still do. Thanks again for posting these.

Thank you so much, John, for taking the time to provide us with the photographs......it brings home the sacrifices of all who fought and died.
Thank you.

Loon: You're welcome. I can't bring it home in the manner that the tour did, but I hope that some folks that read this will do a bit of reading on their own. It was a hell of a battle, and I don't want it to be forgotten. I strongly suspect that you feel the same way.
