Your analogy, first of all, is incorrect. Unlike in your hypothetical "trapped on an island with little food" scenario, where every act of charity performed would be fatally detrimental to the group, the real world is not nearly so Darwinian. Just because someone else benefits does not mean you inevitably lose out. It's not a zero-sum game. (Check that up on your wiki if you've never heard of it.) So if, say, taxes go towards funding social security programs for the disenfranchised, it's no skin off your back, because 1) you probably didn't have to pay much in those taxes in the first place; 2) you or your loved ones might have need for those programs in the future, and 3) improving the lives of the "lower caste" (as you term it) improves the overall human capital of a society, which improves production, which increases the wealth of the economy, which in the long run would also benefit you.

Those that dont have calibre or the instinct to keep improving their mental capacity and up their values will prove over time to, well, fall short of the mark. Try as one might to deny that all this blogging is done for oneself and so one would have nobody to answer to but oneself, hence by some faulty deduction one could then say that this ranting was justified. Or, if this is done for ends like that monthly three inch post on Straits Times, or Cash. That would say quite alot about one's values, wouldnt it.
It becomes clearer now more so than ever that aside from the trite pretty-horse-and-ribbon entries, we cant depend on the author to comment competently on social, or moral issues.
I cant, like nausicaa, do this in a less offending way. I suggest reading more, but as of now I dont think you can be blamed for your ill informed thoughts and beliefs, after all, like those children in some ways, it is also the nature of the education you went through, as well as your upbringing and environment you grew up in that cultivated you to write such a post. As it seems, you meant to say that those willingly abused children would grow up believing that abuse creates a path for salvation and hence they will abuse their children in hope that their children will receive salvation as well.
One in a million chance of that happening, I'd say.
Firstly, children are impressionable. You save them, you teach them. Teach them the right stuff and they will know how inhumane/stupid they were to be willingly abused. Etc etc. They probably will prove to be quite useful when they grow up; having been in the same predicament, they probably will be able to save many other people who after being righted, will contribute to society.
Also, intellect cannot be passed down to children. The only way a parent can influence his/her child in terms of intellect would be accounted for by external inflences i.e heavy prenatal medication, nutrition-lacking diets etc. I'm sure you are aware of that.

By natural selection, what you mean is only good and clever people should live and have offspring, but it's not guaranteed that their offspring will be good and clever people.

Yep, I was mortified by this post. Nausicaa managed to say what I had in mind, better than how I would say it. In addition, I think "natural selection" is just a convenient way for you to justify to yourself that it is rational to ignore the plight of less fortunate people. You can do that if you want, but to try to convince your readership that it's smart to do so because "those people are dumb and deserve to die because if they are smart they would not be in such a situation anyway" is terrible because you equate natural intelligence and ability with education and opportunities available to people living in a more advanced society.
Natural selection still applies in modern society. If it wouldn't, it would mean that evolution is not taking place any longer. Gene proportions of near fatal, or seriously debilitating diseases of which modern medicine has no power over still maintain similar frequencies as they had ages ago. However, for problems which modern medicine and technology have obliviated or relieved to a certain degree, they no longer influence the survivability of an afflicted individual. It is humane to provide as many people as possible with these advantages, within the limits of practicability.
Well, I'm also saddened from reading the comments that many people agree with Xiaxue and are convinced that its smart to be hardened towards the less fortunate. It is neither virtuous nor kind to think that way, even though you're free to do so. Even if you're powerless to help, at least if you have a little compassion, there is a chance that you might help should the opportunity present itself. It doesn't have to be much, but every bit counts. If you convince yourself that not having compassion is right, and not helping is smart, then you never will and I think that's callous and unkind. And the reasons you have for thinking that way are flawed anyway.
It's even more alarming how many people agree with Xiaxue, or are swayed by what she said.

Medicine cannot be completely socialized (free), because people will take advantage of it, service will suffer (i.e. very long wait time). Case in point, Canada is struggling with this sytem. It's not just survival of the fittest, as it turns out. They're disocvering that cooperation plays a huge part in survival. Some species even evolve to cooperate. Wild. And those poor kids -- they aren't dumb, they are being told lies by the adults in their lives. That's what religion can do for you.
I do agree that people need to be held responsible for their actions, and that "natural slection" is a good response for stupid choices that result in injury or death in some cases, but when it comes to small children, I think you should consider my own story:
I grew up in an atmosphere of religious extremism and abusive behavior. I was subjected to physical abuse as well as consistent efforts to make me feel worthless. I was regularly threatened with violence or being locked up to make me "behave." I never knew any other reality until I was older, and I credit my own intelligence, strong will, and the help of my dear friends with my ability to overcome this. But as a child, I thought this was "normal," and when these bad things happened to me, I would blame myself.
Of course, you can say that because of "natural selection," I am now a fairly well-adjusted adult who's broken with religious nonsense. But I remember what it was like to be a child with no idea that what I was experiencing was sick and abnormal.

You've got a point. A lot of things are sad but true. However this does not mean you should be completely indifferent to people who are under-privileged because of their birth as you mention (lower caste). It becomes a vicious cycle and these people get exploited by other people who know they can get away with unjustified abuses (physical or legal). It's true that people are forced to be selfish most of the time, but it does mean that just because they can get away with it, they should do it right? It takes a person to overcome his survival instincts (that is, primarily him/herself) to care for other people. That is why unlike animals which act only according to their primal instincts, human beings are capable of compassion. This is what makes us human. It has a lot less to do with which political theory is correct. It is whether human beings are able to live up to these notions of what are "perfect" to them. And most of the time, humans fail the system...because it's so easy to be dumb, selfish and ignorant.
If Singapore are full of low EQ and non-compassionate folks like you, we are doom to fall as a nation.

Try living in the late 1930s in Nazi Germany. You said survival of the fittest? Are the Jews inferior? Did the 6 million people deserve to die - just because they were Jews? Mind you, although these Jews were the minority, but they were well-educated and held well-paying jobs. Many of them also ran successful businesses and shops.

Societies can only improve if they move up the socio-economic ladder as a whole. More should be done to help and educate those in danger of being left behind, and not just leave them to rot on their own. Isn't that what the Singapore government is advocating? It is the moral responsibility for the wealthy (not super rich, but enough to go by) and more educated to help the needy and those who are left behind.

Your words seems to hint a faint support for eugenics. Even though 'survival of the fittest' is still an applicable theory, surely we are not so apathetic and cold-hearted as to deem it the supreme doctrine that governs how society works?

It is indifferent to me if you publish this or not.
However, when I read your last entry...a few things come to mind.
1) we all have to be careful with "natural selection", because it has been used before to kill people. (nazism, facism in general) History is there to learn from it. Today you are one of the "fit ones" for whatever reasons. But what if tomorrow the standard is raised and we are not. What if we get the passport to the gas chamber?
2) it would be great to see you using your great popularity to help people. I don't follow gossip stuff but understand that A Jolie does this a lot, correct? You could do it too. Your image is your power. You can change lives for the best if you choose to. I am not saying that you HAVE TO, but you could be better than your readers, and lead by example.
3) in a world where computers watch our every movement, it is easier than ever to classify people, target them based on their ideas, and simply and stealthily, eliminate them. Entries in my blog ("you are losing your privacy...", "am i the only one lost?") talk about that. So we should be extra careful. Especially somoene with your exposure
4) solutions to complex problems are complex. We don't want to simplify too much complex problems, because then we apply badly thought solutions. And these backfire.
Of course I'll never tell you how to write your blog. Just wanted to make us all reflect on those points.
