"Iraq Returns To Its Persian Heritage"????!
What a distortion of history this article is! My ex-husband, who rarely gets exercised about these things, was so upset about it that he alerted me to it this morning. I am simply aghast!

Well Shirin, the article may well be propaganda, but it's important to know that there is a faction which is taking this line. But from what little I know of Iraq, I agree with you -- al Sadr's Arabist Iraqi nationalism is clearly the most popular interpretation of national identity among Shiites.
However, there are clearly many influential clerics who are close to Iran, including living there for many years and even working on Iran's behalf in Syria and Lebanon. It isn't surprising that some of them are trying to promote the idea of a Persian Iraq. At least that's how I would read this.

Falluja, Apr 17, (VOI) - Two U.S. bases in Falluja, 57 km west of Baghdad, were simultaneously attacked by mortar shells, a police source in the city said, while locals in Haditha said that two policemen and a civilian were killed when an explosive charge went off.
"Four blasts rattled the U.S. base in central Falluja at 6:00 pm on Tuesday," a source in the Falluja police department told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
"The attack coincided with three other strong explosions targeting the U.S. military base in al-Jeghefy neighborhood in northern Falluja," he said.
"Strong blasts were heard and billows of black smoke were seen rising from the two bases," the source added, noting that U.S. Marine forces cordoned off the areas surrounding the two bases.
Meanwhile, two policemen and a citizen were killed and a police vehicle was destroyed in a bomb explosion in the city of Haditha, 170 km west of Ramadi, locals said.
"A roadside bomb went off on a street in al-Dawaher neighborhood, south of Haditha, at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, targeting an Iraqi police patrol," an eyewitness told (VOI) over the phone.

BAGHDAD, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Five U.S. soldiers were killed and six others injured in insurgent attacks in Baghdad and western Iraq, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.
A soldier assigned to Multi-National Division - Baghdad was killed and two others injured along with their Iraqi interpreter when a sophisticated armored-piercing roadside bomb detonated near their vehicle in southern Baghdad on Monday, the U.S. military said in a statement.
"The unit was conducting a combat security patrol at the time of the attack," it said.
The explosively formed projectiles, or EFPs, were allegedly come from Iran, according to U.S. officials, who previously accused the neighboring country of providing Iraqi Shiite militias with weapons and parts for such bombs.
A second soldier assigned to the same unit was killed and one more wounded when a roadside bomb went off near their vehicle while conducting a security patrol in southern Baghdad on Monday, the military said in another statement.
Another soldier was killed and one more injured when insurgents attacked their vehicle with small arms fire while conducting combat security patrol in southwestern the capital on Monday, the military said in a statement.
Two soldiers were killed and two others injured when their M- 1114 vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in the restive city of Fallujah, 50 km west of Baghdad, on Saturday, according to a separate statement.
Names of the soldiers are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin and release by the U.S. Department of Defense, the statements said.
